Bees swarm district employee's Pontiac

Judy Kuhn got quite a "stinging" shock last week when she looked out the window of the Riverview administration building on Tenth Street in Oakmont.

The "buzz" around the office was that someone's car was covered by insects in the parking lot.

After getting a closer look, Kuhn, a Riverview School District accounting secretary, realized that her once gold Pontiac Sunfire was now a shade of brown, black and yellow.

Her entire front passenger panel was engulfed in a swarm of bees.

"I was shocked. It was sort of like something from a horror movie, with the bees dripping down the bumper," Kuhn said with a chuckle. "It was fascinating."

She had parked in her normal spot that morning, nestled under the shade of a roadside tree.

Apparently, a hive of bees decided Wednesday was moving day, and several hundred of the flying pests migrated to the hood of her car below their branch.

According to Jim Fitzroy, a beekeeper from Penn Hills and uncle of one of Kuhn's co-workers, the queen bee makes the decision to expand the nest. When she leaves, the worker bees follow and take up residence with the boss.

This science lesson was a great tidbit of knowledge for the stunned crowd of onlookers, but Kuhn wanted her car back.

Fitzroy used sugar water, a bristle brush and a honeycomb basket to coax the swarm away from the Sunfire. Some of the buzzing beasts even began to construct a hive inside the wheel well, he said.

He was able to remove all but a few stragglers, who followed his truck as he drove away with the trespassers.

As the work day ended, the vehicle had been returned to its normal state, much to Kuhn's delight.

"I've had no reoccurrence since," Kuhn said. "I'm bee free."

Just don't ask her what that buzzing sound is coming from the speakers.

That dude is taking the bees off without any gloves
