Default speedo and mileage quit working

i just bought my first honda,96' hb DX, the other day,ive been a huge volkswagen person so i dont know much about honda's, but i was driving to work and the speedo started jumping around like crazy from 0-80 and then 2 days ago i left my house and the speedo sat still along with my mileage and my trip, but before the trip and the mileage worked fine, so im sure its either the speed sensor or the gauge cluster, the reason im leaning more towards speed sensor is because the temp and the fuel gauge work fine, so heres the question is there any way i can test one or the other to see which one to buy, a new speed sensors is 91.20 and a new gauge cluster at the wrecking yards $50, thanks for any help

sometimes the vss plug gets correded. pull the plug....take the white insert out with needle nose pliers.....then take a paper clip and lift up on the plastic tab holding the wires into the black vss plug. look for green oxidation...rust....or anything of the liking. either clean the metal tabs....or go to bone yard/junk yard and find a new or less rusty vss clip. small enough where it could fit in your pocket.....not saying you should take it or anything...lol i just payed 20 bucks for a stock 89 accord radio deck so i guess this is my way of paying those junkyards back. oh yeah...the display was cracked too...and i pulled it.
