Default weird question

I had was under the hood and I had to stop the car from running and was unable to leave the area I was working.

I disconnected the negative cable from the battery and the car kept running like nothing, is that usual?

Even when you disconnect the battery, the car still runs off the alternator. Believe it or not you can actually drive like that. Although I wouldn't recommend it.

I didn't think the alternator would keep up without charging a battery. You learn something new everyday

That's not something unusual, if you have a manual gearbox you don't even need a battery. Just push it put in gear let the car start and drive. Just so you know.
