Default Tranny oil change.. DIY Possible?

so has anyone here done a DIY on a 7th gen civic with auto tranny? my tranny oil is in need of a change.. it's not red anymore.. it's more like the color of a motor oil..

also.. i see this car needs 5w-20.. so can i use my mobil 1 synthetic 5w-30 in it? won't have any problems right? can't remember what the 20, 30, 40 stand for...

to change the tranny fluid completely on those cars is extremely difficult, however it is way easy to drain and refill the trans.

The problem is it only drains about 1/3 of the trans fluid when you drain and refill it.

What most people do is just drain it, refill it, drive for a bit, do it again, and so forth. The idea is you are diluting the old fluid each time you change by 1/3, so within three changes you are almost down to only 1/3 of the old fluid left.

As for the 5w-20, its not needed but recommeneded. I say use 5w-30 still but thats just me. the 20 is to help with emissions and fuel economy

ic.. so it's probably a better idea to just bring it to a dealership to have to flush it huh?

do it yourself....it is simple.....he is stating that it is hard to flush ALL the fluid out...not that your car is that hard to do. i could get pictures if you would like......but loosen the drain cock.....replace seal (if you wnat or if there is one) tighten drain cock.......pour oil in...done. you just saved yourself 50 plus bucks and now you know a little more about your car.

yeah i know the procedure to change the tranny oil.. but i wonder why is it that we are only able to do 1/3 change only? is all the rest stuck inside the tranny and no other way to release it?

i done a tranny flush at a jiffy lube before with my first automatic car. it seemed they hook it up to two metal tubes in the engine bay and let the engine run while they flush. is that their way of getting 100% changed?

grr.. ic. well, regardless.. this civic's got 159K miles on there and my dear brother never brought it in for service at all and it's still running strong.

since the tranny oil is like motor oil color now, instead of the reddish color, i guess i better do a full flush.

besides that.. should i be looking into adding some additives for the tranny, since it's got high mileage on there already?

i dont pay attention to automatic setups.....but if your putting in 5-30 or 5-20.....that fluid isnt red. that is motor oil. so you are going to get motor oil color.

he had two seperate questions in the first post if you reread it. one about trans oil and one about engine oil.

The only way to really get it all out is with a flushing machine. It pumps out all the old fluid and flushes all the new stuff in while running so that it gets out everything. If its got that kind of mileage already I wouldn't waste too much money flushing it out. Just dilute it with the 1/3 fluid drains a couple times. Its easy as hell

I hate automatics
