The other issue (besides the tired aesthetic debate) is that in order to maintain the stock rolling circumference, you're forced into running a very narrow profile tire... usually a 35 section or less.
Because those narrow sidewalls are very stiff, all the minor bumps and divots in the road surface are transmitted back through the suspension & steering. Not a setup that I'd call ideal by any means.

For the sake of comparison, the stock wheel & tire combo on a 97 DC4 was 14x6" steel wheels and 185/60R14s.
