Ok, when i got my car first it really didnt smell that much probably becasue the guy before me loaded it with air freshners. After a bit and the air freshners wore off...i never replaced them. I tore the carpet out since it looked like crap, tore out the rear seats, and cleaned the entire car with ammonia while installing dynamat. That killed mostly all the smell in the car. When i turn on my heater though is a different story. Every once and a while you will get a NASTY wiff of something. Its just gross. I was looking in my clymer and i dont see a interior airfiler. Does the 97 cx have a cabin filter???

I just pulled my 2 air vent things out of the dash to replace them with black vents. Now i see where the smell is. The entire venting system has a thick layer of "shit" in there. A ton of dust, some parts of leaves...and alot of fuzz. My 98 integra has a bit in there, but my civic is like 100x's worse. Besides removing the entire dash, pulling out the vents, and cleaning them is there any other way to get them clean.

Only other idea i can think of is to get a brush that bends and loosen up as much crap as i can and suck it out with a vaccum. But then some may fall down into the blower wont it? But i should probably replace my blower soon as it squeeks every now and again.

 

pulling the dash is easier than you think. I would say pull the dash, clean the vents, and clean the blower motor and heater core also.

yup it wasnt that bad. I started at 10 and finished now 1:15. And thats with 2 lunch breaks (i was hungry ) welding 2 brackets and cleaning the vents.
Kinda killed 2 birds with one stone there. Fixed the annoying rattle i couldnt find somewhere in the dash, and cleaned the blower motor and the vents.
