Default Temperature Gauge goes to HIGH when at stop lights, shows normal temp when driving

Hi All,

I have a 1995 Acura Integra Special Edition. I have 143,000 miles on it. This is a commuter car, not modified or raced.

I have a problem with the temp gauge. When i drive the car on city or highway streets the temp shows right in the middle between the "C" and "H". When i'm at stop lights, the needle shoots all the way up to "H". Then, it goes back down to the middle when I start driving again.

Any tips on solving this problem would be appreciated!

Hopefully you haven't already blown a head gasket or warped your head.

Replace your thermostat asap.

My guess is thermostat, your fans aren't turning on. Replace that, and do a complete coolant flush.

before you change your thermostat, check the coolant level in the radiator with the car cold(never take the radiator cap off when its hot) . make sure the radiator is full, then make sure your have some coolant in the overflow tank. sounds like you have a flow problem caused by low coolant level. also, air in the cooling system can cause this. don't forget to fill the coolant level with a 50/50 solution of coolant and water.

Just a follow-up question: Are the radiator fans turning on at about 200°F coolant temp?
