Does 97 3.2 TL have to take premium gas?

Does 97 3.2 TL have to take premium gas?
My manual says I must use premium. Does anyone have a 3.2 who uses regular gas and doesn't have any problems with it? I'm reluctant to try it until I hear from several owners who use regular. Thanks, Paul
