Another reason why I won't move out to Cali.
Kim and his team at Oregon State University equipped a test car with a global positioning device to keep track of its mileage. Eventually, every car would need one.
"So, if you drive 10 miles you will pay a certain fee which will be, let's say, one tenth of what someone pays if they drive 100 miles," says Kim.
The new tax would be charged each time you fill up. A computer inside the gas pump would communicate with your car's odometer to calculate how much you owe.

ugh, thats retarded. not to mention people that will learn how to tamper with the onboard gps to alter the read mileage, itll create one hell of a headache. and also, who decides on how much the tax will be? will it apply to semi-truck drivers, etc. and what about college students or anyone for that matter that has little money to spare. but like grifter said, if it happens it will be a while, in which i still think its a retarded idea
Consider the infrastructure changes needed to implement this system.
Thousands of petrol stations would need to be retrofitted with this system, in addition to transmitters going into every new car sold. And even if it did go into service, people would find a way to shut down the car's transciever or severely restrict it's range.
