I'm having a problem trying to figure out why my cooling fans aren't coming on my 96 GSR when it heats up. So far i've changed the thermostat and the coolant temp. sensor. I've also flushed the radiator and replaced with new 50/50 coolant. I know the fans work because when i turn on the a/c, the fans come on. So everytime i'm at a stop light or something, i turn on my a/c to make sure it doesn't over heat. I'm thinking about trying the fan switch next. Has any1 else had this problem. I don't want to spend anymore money if it turns out not being the fan switch. Any help is appreciated.

 

My fan only comes on when idling for a good amount of time. My car doesn't overheat and I think it is normal. The AC fan only goes on when the AC is on. Does yours come on after a period of idle?

 

Nope thats the problem...i let it sit and idle and then it'll start overheating and the fans won't turn on..so when i turn the a/c on, the fans come on and the temp starts coming back down..i can hear when the thermostat opens, but the fans stay off

 

There is on fan for the AC and another for the radiator. The fan closest to your intake is the one for the radiator and that may be blown from what you have described.

 

yes...however, both fans come on when i turn on the a/c..so i know both fans are in working condition.

 

sounds like your sensor is gone $500.00 part. dealer only. rig a switch to turn it on manually.

 

i Changed the fan switch on a 97 civic 1.6, It was like $20 from Napa and it worked like a charm!!. The coolest thing is that it took less than 10 mins to install!!.

 

The fan switch should have a setpoint higher than the thermostat. So it won't come on until the temperature climbs above normal. (But not all the way up...)

Unplug the fan switch, jumper it's wire with a paperclip. Key on, this should make the fan(s) come on. Check this first, if it works, then the rest of the system (fuses, relays, etc) are OK.

Call around, I can't believe that fan switch is all that expensive ($500?? wtf..) If you really don't wanna buy a new fan switch, take it out & make up some jumper wires to a multi-meter. Stick the switch in a pot of water with a thermometer. Heat it up & see what temperature the switch closes at.

 

Aight thanx. I'll try that this weekend. I went to an Acura dealership and asked around for a $500 sensor and they just looked at me weird. Fan switch was about $30. If it is the fan switch, should i go for a Mugen or Spoon low temp fan switch? Would i need to change the thermostat to a low temp one too?

 

I jumpered the fan switch today and the fans came on, so I guess thats the problem. Now i just gotta decide what kinda fan switch I want. Has any1 tried a Mugen or Spoon low temp switch?
