so i'm thinking about upgrading from my stock wheels
Bear in mind I drive this car as a commuter car. I put 700 miles/week on it so it does really well on gas and it saves miles on my Audi. I don't want to spend a ton.
I want to do bigger wheels just to enhance handling and to get wider tires so I get more traction which will yield better stopping power, especially since I don't have ABS.
Do I go with EX wheels/hubcabs? How wide are the tires? Or do I go with something else? I don't want anything to look bling or ricey, I want tasteful and functional at the same time. Ideas?

You might want to opt for a set of Rota wheels. They're light, cheap and look good (for the most part). You can either go with a 15x6.5" wheel with 205/50/15 tires or a 16x7" wheel with 205/45/16 tires. I'm sure that either setup will be lighter than the 14" stocker wheels (which I think weigh in about 27 or 28lbs).
Search around the site for a few sellers or search the wheel on google to see a design that you'll like. There are a lot of members here that  their Rota's.

sweet, thanks for the information! I'll check em out.
Are you serious about the stock wheels weighing in that much? Holy crap, my 17's on my A4 weigh 26 pounds. The stock 14" steelies weight in at the same amount? Wow.
15 x 6.5 may work...it is a slightly higher profile tire and cheaper.
Thanks for not responding with your standard "STFA"

Usually when folks get new wheels and tires, they put all season or high grip tires on the new wheels and then put a set of snow tires on the stockers. Don't know if you want to go that route, but it is an attractive option, especially if you want to protect your new investment.
actually I have a dedicated set of winter wheels/tires for my A4. I figure with AWD, ABS, and ESP (electronic stability control), the A4 gets driven in the snow, and the Civic will stay home. The A4 has a lot of traction since it has AWD, plus it's funner to turn off stability and romp on the gas to get my back end to come out. FWD is only fun in snow if you do reverse donuts.
