does a turbo setup HAVE to have one? is it just HIGHLY recommended? im in the midst of gettin a full turbo kit w/o bov for $700

yes you need one. without it you are likely to get compressor surge which can be very damaging to the seals etc of the turbo.

atleast pickup a cheap bov from a junkyard or something. aslong as it functions properly.

when you let off the throttle, the turbo is still spooling, that pressure has to escape somewhere, so yes you do need a BOV.

 

And how else are you going to get that blowoff valve noise :-)

Yes, you need one unless you want to blow your turbo. If you don't want the noise, recirculate it back into the intake system before the turbo. There are a few aftermarket BOV's (like the Greddy Type S) that have special ports to allow for this.

 

It is "possible" to run a turbo without a BOV however I dont reccomended it for anything over 5psi as it will cause surge and eventually lead to an early rebuild/repair of the turbo.

 

how come turbo diesels don't have BOV's/bypass valves then?

 

No idea, I've never worked with a turbo diesel. The whole "no sparkplug" thing really bothers me.

 

have you never took off from a light with a semi truck in the lane next to you and tried to time your shifts with his so it sounds like your car has a bov? :chuckles: alot of semi trucks/turbo diesels have BOVs,..and they are loud too
