Default Ripped shifter cable boot under car.....

okay, i'm doing some much needed maintenence on my '92 GS (ripped CV boots, etc.) and under the car, right where the shifter cable enters the tranny, there is a boot. Now, when I go to replace this, white type of grease should I pack it with? any? white lithium? axle? then also, how do I pull that shaft out of the tranny? do I remove the exhaust heat shield & unbolt it from under the shifter, then pull the whole thing out? will my tranny fluid spill out at all? thank you for any input.

not exactly sure how to get the cable out, but do not pack any type of grease in it. the grease will attract dirt (even with a good boot) and can cause the cable to bind.

Someone must have done this.....I think some confusion might be coming from the fact i'm calling it a cable, when in reality, it's a big rod that goes into the tranny. it's a manual, not an auto. i just called it a cable 'cause that's what the Helm's calls it....

No you dont pull that shaft out. If your talking about the intermediate shaft. The cv shaft fits into that you just got to pull it out. It just clicks out.

it's the rod that connects your shifter to the transmission. on the transmission side of the rod, ther is a small boot, probly 1-1 1/2 inches in diameter, quite small. Mine is ripped to shreds, and i'm sure others on here must've replaced theirs....

no grease...its just a dust boot, to keep the slip from getting dirt and stuff in it.

oooh, i know what you are talking about.

there is a circlip that goes around the linkage which is convered by the boot. remove that clip and you will see a roll pin holding the shift linkage to the transmission linkage. remove that roll pin and the two will separate. then you can pull the old boot off and pu the new one on.
