Default 89 octane instead of 91 be ok?

i was wondering if it would be ok to put 89 octane instead of 91 because it does have high compression and i cant exactly afford to pay for 250 91 octane at the moment...car is a 05 rsx-s by the way, my moms by the way just using it untill i get my own car

your car will not performe right and it's bad for the engine if you dont use the correct octane level that is stated in your owners manual.

its not smart to go below the recommended-needed level

the engine's timing is for the flashpoint of 91+ octane. your engine will knock because the timing will be off and your gas mileage will suffer. it will end up costing about the same for either one. pay more for better gas mileage and less gallons or pay less per gallon but have to fill up more often because of the decrease in fuel economy. i have an '04 S and i got a credit card that gives a 3% rebate on all gas purchases. i applied for one that gave you 5% but i didn't have the credit history to get approved for it.

Also, for most people, stepping down a grade in gasoline isn't going to have much of a financial impact. Where I live the price difference between 89 octane and 93 octane is normally about 10 cents/gallon. I drive my car pretty hard and normally only get 17 - 21 mpg. Luckily I live in a smaller town (less mileage) so I only have to fill up with about 10 gallons every two weeks. So with a 10 cents/gallon difference and 10 gallons every two weeks, we're only talking about saving $1 every two weeks... Easily affordable.

Now obviously you might drive a lot more miles than I do, but I still think the minimal extra cost is easily worth it to keep my car running as it was meant to... The best way to save on the cost of gas? Take it easy on the accelerator. (A lesson I myself can't seem to grasp. )

I thought the RSX had knock sensors that would adjust the timing in a case like this...

Just don't do it. It doesn't save much and it screws up the engine. Don't be cheap now, because down the road, you'll regret it.

We were just in Canada for a drive with some friends that drive S2000's, we were paying .969 per liter over the weekend. The drive we did on Saturday was over 700 kilometers.

700 kilometer = 434.9598346 mile
1 gallon [US, liquid] = 3.7854118 liter
40 Canadian Dollar = 31.81167 US Dollar = typical fill up
1 gallon cost = $3.67 US dollars

Saturday's drive cost us about 60 USDollars. Plus the drive to the meet and back home, 315 miles each way. Which came out to 1 tank in each direction.
