Senna name to return to racing
Bruno Senna, nephew of the late Ayrton Senna, will take part in his first car race this weekend when he competes in a round of the Formula BMW UK Championship at Brands Hatch.
Bruno, 20, has plenty of karting experience, but this will be his first single-seater event. He will be entered in the remaining three rounds of the 2004 season by Carlin Motorsport, who have been testing the Brazilian in preparation for an eventual move into Formula Three.
“I have done a test program at two circuits in the UK and I feel that I am now familiar enough with the car to go racing,” said Bruno. “I’m planning to do the last three races at Brands Hatch, Rockingham and Donington.
“I have never run on these tracks, so it won’t be easy as the other drivers have tested or raced at two of them. But I’m not worried about this. The important thing is to try and qualify in the top ten places and then get used to racing the other drivers.”
Ayrton Senna also started his single-seater career in Britain, back in 1981 when he won the Formula Ford 1600 series. He went on to take the British Formula Three title before progressing to Formula One racing in 1984.
He is looking down and smiling today, his legacy continues.
