ice will calm the swelling and relieve some of the pain.

so my brother tried telling me that if you break a toe they put a cast on your whole foot, i told him he was full of shit. he said he had a friend who broke their pinky toe and they couldn't walk for a while.. i broke my big toe and that's a different story.

Worst case scenario, if it is broken, they may splint your toe.
They won't put a cast on the whole foot.
And broken or not, get the ice on it. It will help.
When I dropped a tranny on my big toe
h: ... ice worked wonders.
Ultimately, they put a splint on my big toe (fortunately, no bones were broken - the joint was just smashed to hell), and stitched up the wound. In a week, I was walking and driving fine. In four, I was back to normal.
