a sway bar is actually part of your suspension, where as the tie bar is a reinforcement for the chassis.

Here in this picture you can see both. It's a '98 Integra, that's an ITR rear sway bar and Spoon Lower Tie Bar. The spoon tie bar is the silver one.

Generally speaking, sway bars do not affect alignment.

A word on the actual function of sway bars and tie bars:

A tie bar simply reinforces the body of the car by tieing it together at two or more points.

A sway bar connects the two sides of a suspension, is made from spring steel and works somewhat like a spring that transfers force from one side of the car to the other. In a turn the natural tendency of the car is to lean to the outside. So in a right turn, the left side suspension compresses and the right is extended. A sway bar takes some of the force which would otherwise compress the left suspension and uses it to keep the right side from extending as much as it would without the bar. The thicker the bar, the more pronounced the effect.

i was just thinking it might affect the alignment because you need to unbolt the bolts that hold in the (mind blank) ................. the control arms? if they move around when your trying to fit the bolts back in? just wondering

sorry. yea same with the lower tie bar. removing and replacing the LCA bolt to install the tie bar shouldnt change the suspension geometry.
