Default Factory Coolant and Factory Brake Fluid questions for ITR

Hello, time to change the fluids in my ITR. It is a 2000 model, and it has been in storage most of its life, having just hit 4000 miles. Other than the engine oil, all factory fluids are still present.

Can anyone suggest a high performance brake fluid? I know that the owners manual calls for DOT3 fluid. Is there a high performance DOT3 fluid available? As info, I have the stock brake pads.

What about clutch fluid? suggestions on fill?

Does the ITR have long life coolant? It is blue in color, and I have never seen regular coolant in the color blue. Any suggestions or comments? If it's is regular coolant, it needs to be changed.

Thanks to everyone for the continuing advice...

JC

For just street driving, i'd use OEM Honda brake fluid.

For track use, ATE Superblue/Typ200 is good. Motul 600 is better - more expensive but you wont have to bleed it often, or at all.

The ITR calls for standard Honda coolant, which is green, and isn't long life. I'm not sure why yours is blue, unless you're looking at the washer fluid reservoir.

Well, I might be colorblind. I looked again, and the coolant is green. No, I wasn't looking at the washer resevoir, you really can't see it anyway. Sure looked blue, but looked again and it is definitely green  ...Will change coolant.

It is not a full time track car, but it will see use out at VIR on open track days and CarGuys meets. What do you think about the Motul fluid or other performance alternatives for a daily driver? I do drive the car 16 miles round trip every day to and from work.

As always, thanks for the advice. Will post pics of my toys...64 Impala SS 383 Stroker 4Sp, 93 Yamaha FZR 600, and of course, the Type R......

I dont know, about daily driving with Motul. Mine is driven at the track, and then usually parked for a week or more at a time.

It shouldnt be a problem though - i've got 10 track days/1000+ track miles (and 3000 street miles) on the car this year and havent touched the fluid. You may want to give a shot and then flush at some point during the year? ATE will work fine in a daily driver but will require more frequent bleeding.

Thanks for the tip on the Motul 600...Not looking for something that requires flushing yearly....

What about the Motul DOT 5.1 synthetic fluid for a daily driver? It is compatible with DOT3 and DOT4....

According to retailers websites, it is low maintenance and good for ABS systems and seals also.........Anyone out there have experience with this fluid?

For a car that sees track use, this should be the minimum flushing interval, IMO, and if you can get away with only once a year thats pretty damn good. I'm not sure if i'll make it all year but i'll try!

Even for just a street car you should be flushing every other year.

This thread has some good information on high-performance brake fluids.

You can use DOT 3, DOT 4, or DOT 5.1 (but not DOT 5). The Motul 600 RBF has higher boiling points than Motul 5.1.

Use the Honda brand coolant.

I've been using Motul 600 RBF in my cars for years with no adverse affects. Daily driven, autocrossed and occasional track days as well.

As far as the clutch fluid, you can use the same Motul as for the brakes, or just standard Honda fluid.
