Default First auto-x today (8/4/02): My thoughts and questions

Okay, so auto-xing is the coolest thing this side of winning the lottery. Even though I did pretty bad, I had a lot of fun. At least I wasn't the slowest driver out there. But even if I had been, who cares?

Anyway, I need my car to handle better and I could use your thoughts and recommendations. I currently have AGX and GC coilovers with a 2000 Si front upper strut on my 93 Dx hatch. I also have stock steelies with crapco tires that squealed like a stuck pig from green to checkerd flag.

On my "things I need to spend my hard earned money on" list are the following:

15" rims (as light as possible i.e. Rota C8)
Much better tires (Kuhmo?)
Suspension
brakes
seat
harness

Recommend some particular items that fall into the above categories that would help me point my car more efficiently and might even be affordable. I'm considering a complete GSR brake and suspension swap followed by upgraded rotors and rear swaybar (itr, comptech, ?).

My driving could have been much better also. The excitment of the event circumvented my driving knowledge and abilities which resulted in an ugly display of understeer and generally erratic maneuvering.

**Cliff's Notes: Auto-x rocks. Driver needs to use brain. Car snowplows. Help.

you probably don't want to upgrade the brakes too much. You'll bump up a class. But the wheels and tires are a must.

Well you will just get slaughtered in FSP. Those guys are spending all they can to the rules. I would suggest STS since that's the class made for us import guys.

First I would recommend a Novice school or Evolution School (http://www.autocross.com/evolution) held in your area. That in itself willl knock off lots of time cause the driver always needs fixing first before the car I attended my first Evolution School and knocked off about 2-4 seconds and now running in the top 5 in PAX

I would suggest a lightweight wheel: Kosei K1, Konig Heliums, Rota Subzeros, Rota Slipstreams, and if you want to spend more money SSR COmpetitions, RH CP-035s, Volk TE-37s.

Then get the Falken Azenis tires in 205/50x15".

Actually, I didn't see any other FSP cars there. They may have been there, but I never saw them. In fact, I was the only H/A car there. There were some other SP cars, but no FSP. However, I was one of the slower cars in my run group. It was rather funny to see two 01 Z06 vettes line up behind me. There was a very sick 00 Impreza running in STS and he was very quick.

Yes, I certainly could use some driving classes and practice. However, my area's SCCA had to cancel their school scheduled for this month and I don't know when another will be in the area. Oh well, I'll just have to keep looking.

Where do you live?

FSP is really the catch all class where all the slowest cars from HS go to. We have a couple of FSP drivers - it just varies region to region. Like our STS class usually has 10-15 cars and Philly region has 25+ cars.

I'm in northern Nevada. We don't have nearly the population of Vegas or similar major metro areas. To give you an idea of the cars yesterday, there were a 4-5 911's, 6-7 Vettes, 6-7 Mustangs, 1 RX-7, 1 Viper, 3 Miatas, 5-6 old Datsuns, 3-4 Scoobies, 1 Audi TT, etc. I've seen a couple Type R's at previous events and a CRX or two. However, yesterday I was the only H/A car in attendance.

Do I currently qualify for STS with KYB AGX, GC coilovers, and 00 SI strut bar as my only performance mods? I have a full interior, BTW.

WOW! Your region sounds a bit richy rich. Our region consists of: 1-2 RX7s, LOTS of Miatas, several CRXs, LOTs of Corvettes and Mustangs, a couple of Ford Foci, LOTs of Civics, couple of ITRs, a couple of WRXs, and lots of MOD cars. I have only seen on Viper show up to another region, and a Ferrari F355 spyder (which I drooled all over since it' smy favorite car).

You would be in STS also.

It's funny you say that because my particular area is pretty average as far as $$$ is concerned. However, not too far away is Lake Tahoe and there is a considerable amount of money up there. Many of the drivers are from that area. I'm actually surprised there aren't more econoboxes racing. I see some nasty EF's and CRX's around town, but I've yet to see them at the events.

If anyone is interested, the link below includes pics of my car and some from the above-mentioned autox. Enjoy.

I would have taken some action shots, but the batteries in the digicam pooped out.
