Default ECU question, etc.. PLEASE HELP!

just wanted to say wassup to all. As you can tell i am new to this site. If you all dont mind me asking for help, i have the following questions...

how can you identify a GSR ECU, i know the code is P72. But is there a different code or other numbers besides P72 for 94-95 and higher models?

If i am not mistaken, the 94-95 GSR ECU and motor has no knock sensor right???

last, the reason for these questions is because... we did a swap on my friends hatch. When he picked up the motor, we were sure that the motor was from a 95 GSR. only thing is that, we are uncertain if the ECU is from the same car. Right now, the CHECK ENGINE light pops up from time to time and dissappears. He flashed it for the code and i think he said it was a code 23..."KNOCK SENSOR".. now if i am right, the 94-95 has no knock sensor, so is it possible that they may have given him a 96 and up GSR ECU?? I figure the light would be on because we have no wires hooked up to a non-existing knock sensor, but the ECU is equipped with it..

ANY answers or help would be greatly appreciated!!!

The only code for the GSR ECU is P72 and all 94+ GSRs have knock sensors (I have a 94 b18c1 in my hatch) You need to wire up the knock sensor. Oh yeah I asume he swapped this motor in a 92-95 civic so if that is the case then a 96+ ECU would not plug into his civic harness (since 96+ is obd2). So he has the right obd1 P72 all you need to do is wire up the knock sensor. You may also want to make sure he wired up the secondaries in the intake manifold, Its a pink/blue wire that needs to go in ECU pin out A17. You can check all your wiring here http://www.hybridgarage.com/tech/5gtech/index.html

All B18C1's had knock sensors. Any Honda engine that requres premium fuel will have a knock sensor (that's the engine's way of telling if you cheaped out on gas to protect itself). The sensor is on the back of the engine by the oil pressure sensor and oil filter. That wire will have to be run to D3 on the ECU to get rid of the error code. Since the ECU can't get a signal from the knock sensor, it will most likely put itself into limp mode (richer, less aggressive fuel maps to protect itself from low octane gas) and your car will have less power.
