Sub Enclosure 96-00 Civic Hatchback
Hey guys, I am looking to do a more custom system in my 99 Hatchback. I have 2 Alpine 12" type R subs that I want to install but not sure where I should put them. Right now I have them in a simple hatchback box that clutters up the hatch and is not very appealing to the eye. I am not really feeling the fiberglass job and would like to do the entire thing in MDF if possible. Any sugestions, let me know.

Boy, shooting yourself in the foot ehh...
I will make one recommendation....learn to use fiberglass in that application...it will save you a lot of space, and the box will fit right the first time. It is not difficult to learn, and if you ask nicely, perhaps we can assist you with your system...
i feel you though on the audio forum thing, it doesn't get as many hits. Takes a long time before anybody even sees the question. I was considering building a "wall" around my box also so it takes up the rest of my hatch and looks cleaner. This will also keep the right enclosure size to keep the sound good. I know nothing about fiberglass either.
Its kinda hard to get really custom with the limitations of MDF. Even with imagination and creativity, youre going to have flat surfaces, corners, and edges which will increase in complexity with more angles if you choose to persue a custom MDF fabrication.
Some ideas for that space might be building enclosures on each side of the hatch area which comes out flush with the strut towers. Check for air space requirements. This arrangement in MDF is going to create alot of difficult angles and sealing issues with the box in that space.
If you dont want to retain your spare tire, you can build a box into the wheel well and have them firing up. To add a custom touch you can order a fiberglass tub or plate to mount your subs to and have it painted to match your vehicle, although I think this theme was so overplayed in the 80s-90s it just doesnt look modern anymore.
