LS tranny

would anybody suggest using a LS tranny for a type R swap?

you can use it...a gsr or type r tranny would probably be better since they are closer gear ratios and will give you better acceleration. Ls is good for like cruising on the freeway

In order of preference,
92-93 GS-R YS1
any B16A cable transaxle
90-93 RS/LS/GS YS1

An actual ITR transaxle would be nice, but would need a cable/hydro conversion kit.
