need help with my lsvtec??

well this is the second time I have put rings in my engine. Fisrt time was after the initial build.
My setup:
b18a bottom end W/ eagle rods and srp pistons
top end is gsr head with mild work and stage 3 cams

any way it blows smoke like a mother f..cker. First time I assumed the rings never seated do to too fine of a hone. this time I used a rough hone and honed the shit out of it. 150mi later this time it blows smoke just as bad. the head was vacuum checked at the machine shop so the valve seats are all good.

I have a feeling that the head isnt mateing with the block somehow. All I know is that I did everything necessary to put them together. reloxcated dowels, drilled exhaust side rivets out of head gasket, lots of copper seal, torqued to 73 ft. I checked the dowels to make sure they arnet too tall and everything is good there. I am loosing oil and I really dont think it could be the rings this time....

any input or ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

just did compression check:#4..210 #3..225 #2..225 #1..225.

this is the same results that I had last time before I changed my rings. What could be going on here???

The rings aren't going to seat in 150miles. If you think the rings are leaking still, run it hard for about another 150 miles, and that should eliminate all doubt about rings not seated.

Other than that, is there any oil on the spark plugs?

Did you have the head rebuilt with fresh guides and valve seals?

jfdmas 08-10-2003 02:16 PM

yes their is lots of oil on the plugs, and yes everything was replaced on the head. Besides I had it vacuum checked before the rebjuild.

The block and head were checked for flatness?

jfdmas 08-10-2003 09:32 PM

I should hope so they decked the block and had all the parts!! I cant imagine them not checking after decking the block.

If it was decked, it should be fine.

What kind of rings and what kind of ring end-gaps are you using?

Also, you're sure the VTEC oil port in the head was plugged properly?

jfdmas 08-10-2003 10:20 PM

I file fitted the rings to 17 thous. they were really tight around4-5 thous. they are je house rings. the port was plugged witha pipe 1/8 pipe plug. that would explain alot though if it was something with the plug.

Are there any external oil leaks?

jfdmas 08-11-2003 01:45 PM

no external that I can see but there was before. I thought It was just the distributer seal leaking. I cant really see zanything now.
