The marks are ont he crank pulley. The red mark is spec, the two other marks are +/- 2 degrees, the white mark is TDC. Detailed instructions with pics here:

oh, and DO NOT use the white mark to set ignition timing
I would set it to the red mark.

Okay so I should use the red mark and not the white mark right.. Okay the werd thing is that I don't see the red mark unless the timing gun is set a zero. Is there something wrong??

You set the timing light to 0 if you're using the marks on the crank. If you want to advance the timing beyond what the marks on the crank indicate, then you set your timing light to however many degrees you want to advance, and then use the same mark ont he crank pulley. Or, you can disregard the red/brown marks alltogether, and just set your timing light to howeve many degrees you want your timing set at, and then set it to the white TDC mark. Since the timing light accounts for the advance, setting the timing to the TDC mark will mean that your timing is at TDC, plus whatever the setting ont he light is.

ok, i know this is a really old post, but I was wondering the same thing, and hoping someone could clear this up for me. The red mark on the crank pulley is 16, so if my inductive timing light is set to 0 and its right on the white mark, that means the timing is set correctly?

I'm assuming you mean your timing light has the adjustible dial on the back of it. If that's the case, at zero, your timing pointer should not be set on the white mark, it should be closer to the red mark. As you set the dial to 16, it should reach the white mark.
