when do u know u hit vtec

its not really for economy, just not totally for performace. You're thinking of VTEC-E, thats the economy vtec.

yes i'm sure....did he have an intake on it? even by just taking out the stock airbox/resonator and putting on a short pipe with a k&n filter we heard it. he has the aem cai now.

VTEC is a mix of being able to get more specific output from a smaller engine without sacrificing streetability and fuel mileage. Whether you use that fact to be able to get up to speed quicker on the on ramp going to work so that you can spend more time at cruise speed [which is where you get your best gas mileage], or spend 90% of your time in VTEC squeezing every last pony out of the engine doesn't really matter. In stock form, VTEC engines are sort of a compromise without compromises between performance and economy.

Nicely said man! There are the variations of vtec like the vtec-e and i-vtec the e being for better gas milage [and that it is!] and i for more performance i believe. Either way you get more HP, torque, and maintain gas milage in VTEC.
