If I remember correctly, that model year was pretty much a lost hope. Engine swap is the answer.

That engine should be the d16a1 right? You can get a skunk2 throttlebody and intake manifold, BDL fuel rail, universal fuel pressure reg., walbro 255lph fuel pump, injectors, pacesetter headers or you can get some for a 88-91 honda crx and port the headers to match the ports on the d16a1 ( not needed unless you want the most hp out of the headers), ignition upgrade, gude performance cam and head packages up to 50 hp gain. and a 1.5 sec drop in you 1/4 mile time, turbo, muffler, ram/cold air intake,. this should be enough to get you started. you can get most of these parts from Nopi.

You could swap in a b series motor using the hasport kit or run some dohc ZC parts in the motor such as cams and use high performance pistons for other d series motors.

b16a2 swap but you will need a plasma cutter to cut away some metal on the driver's side because the altenator bracket will get in the way.
