Default how to fix lag in 4th/5th gears

ok, went drag/street racing tonight with my best friend, and he was constantly pulling cars in 1st - 3rd gears, but when he got into 4th and hit VTEC it was all laggy, like it was working extra hard to pull rpms...he has adj cam gears, and its only advance the intake 1deg and retarded the exhaust 1deg, had the FPR set last night to 40lbs when under a load, we are at 5600ft above sea level so the engine cant use all the fuel the ECU wants to give it....will advanceing the intake to like 4deg help this lag problem or is there something else that may be wrong or needs to be done to help this issue, BTW he has a B16a3 with an ITR tranny..i dont know if thats any help

The ECU automatically compensates for barometric pressure, so you have the correct amount of fuel for your altitude already.

4 degrees is a lot of advance. What cams & pistons does he have?

Is this the stock motor for the car?

Get a shorter final drive
Lighter flywheel
BOOST

But seriously, how hard do you need it to pull in 4th gear? 5th gear is not a racing gear obviously. Not to mention you are at a high altitude, so it's not going to pull as well anyways. And if he has agressive cams, he may want to check with Spoon first to see how much difference in timing you can have between the intake and exhaust cams, because it's possible the valves will hit...this is the case with skunk2 stage 2 cams.

im not sure where he can get a smaller final drive gear from..hes got the ITR tranny..and that has a pretty small final drive gear in it...and his motor seemed to pull harder when he had the stock cams in..maybe hes just pulling so much harder in 1-3 that it just seems laggy..lol

If he has the 4.400 FD ITR tranny and wants shorter gearing, he can switch to the 4.785 FD ITR tranny.

I agree with what's being said. It really doesn't matter too much what tranny you're using, the higher the gears, the taller the ratio, and the harder the pull. A lower final drive would help, after that, the only remedy is more power
