Is it possible to disable the AC from mechanical and climate control system function
My 1999 Acura 2.3 cl needs a new air conditioning clutch. Of course this means a new A.C. (according to my mechanic of 20 years who sold me the car at a price that the best of friends couldn't tolerate). Still, the AC, which will get some other parts in addition to the compressor, will cost me $760 using aftermarket parts. Even though I'm in a very tight money situation, thanks to Dubya's booming economy, the thought of spending almost $800 for something that I use maybe 3 months in the year and has absolutely nothing to do with the primary and secondary benefits of the car, for me is a hard nut to crack. The car has only 120,000 miles on it (we just buried my wife's 1991 Oldmobile Cutless Supreme at 190,000!) and everything about it is a pure dream. The main problem is the AC clutch smokes even when the climate control is turned off! Is it possible to disable the AC from mechanical and climate control system functions until I have time to face the music?

Apparently I'm not familiar enough with the CL's because the honda's that i've seen have separate belts for each device.
If the configuration is how i'm thinking, you should probably just unplug the wiring to the a/c compressor. that's if the problem is that the ac is trying to spin. if it's something mechanical (i.e. the clutch is stuck), it's probably still going to smoke.

Thanks for your thoughtful and immediate replies and suggestions.
As my learning curve spirals in on this task and as noted by those of you who are more learned, yes, the AC drive belt includes the alternator in its travels.

Question about the AC
Im sorry Im kindda new at this. I have a 1992 acura legend that I was wondering how to refill its refrigerant. I go to school right now and its intense hours and not to mention I work in the day. I don't have a lick of money to spend on mechanic. I work on my car anyway. Can you help?
