Reintroduction/ introduce yourself

Hello all you CRX nuts.

I've been off the forum for quite a while [unusual for a moderator, for sure], so I thought I'd let everyone know that I'm back and give a little background on myself.

I'm currently an ROV technician for Oceaneering International, Inc working in the gulf of mexico, doing electrical, hydraulic, mechanical, fabrication and welding work.

I've also spent a good portion of my working career as an automotive/restoration mechanic, engine builder [over 300 to date, ranging in size from .12cui RCs up to 460cui Fords, and everything in between], a Johnson/Evinrude factory service mechanic, and a Navy submarine contractor.

My CRX of choice is my 1985 CRX DX that I've owned since '99. Currently it's got a bored/blueprinted EW3 sporting dual Weber DCOE40 carbs, MSD, DC header and a home fabbed 2.5" all stainless mandrel bent exhaust. I've also converted to integra brakes, poly bushings, and remote locks. That's going to change after the first of the year though, making the switch to EFI with a 180WHP B16 going in.

So anyways, that's me, I'd like to hear from the current regulars and see where we're at skill and timewise with our CRX group.

88crxTurbo 01-23-2007 03:38 PM

Hello. I myself have been gone from H-A.net for quite a while. I also am doing electrical work locally for a residential/commercial electrician. My weekends are mainly devoted to my Crx, 88 Si. Right now it had a zc engine, with the si tranny. 92-95 civic Greddy Turbo kit, pushing 8 pounds. I recently went to go and get an alignment because of my recently added full tien suspension. And finally (as we older honda owner's know) had to practically buy brand new parts for everything in the way of....Bearing's, Ball Joint's, Tie Rod's (Inner and Outter), and it was also time to convert to a new crossmember up front...considering how mine recently snapped in half....Rust.. So I am in the process of finding some change to purchase the Innovative Front Crossmember replacement. Made with tubular steel, it is much smaller (yet still very strong) and a hell of a lot lighter. I am looking foreward to this Change, and cant wait also till I get MY B16 Sir in this coming month. Keep me updated on your recent install and let me know how it goes.

bob01721 01-24-2007 09:49 AM

Been gone awhile myself. Good to see you're here/back, Harry. When it comes to Hondas, you are Da MAN!

I've been playin' with cars since the late 60's. Never did it for a living, but over the years I've rebuilt engines, carburators (remember them?), generators (remember them?), yada yada, and am trying to keep up with the newer stuff. I'm still learning my way around OBD-II and do most of my troubleshooting with a DMM, vacuum gauge, and a little Palm Scope.

Never did any serious mods (not really my thing). I'm more of an engine and suspension guy who's pretty fair with electrical stuff (E.E. by training).

jdblack1 02-26-2007 01:36 PM

Well it appears that I've not been the only one gone for a while.

I had some family things come up, divorce mainly, and have been getting my life back on track. I've been through several Crx's and Civic's since I left but ended up having to sell them for financial reasons.

The itch has been getting stronger inside me for about the past year and I've decided that I will be suiting up more Honda mod fun soon.

So welcome back Harry and everyone else.

Hondelso 05-13-2007 12:40 PM

I am somewhat new to the forums. I mostly lurk around, and read what problems people have that I have run into, or know about on how to fix it.

I am 26(27 as of May 17, 2007). I have been married for about 2 years, and have a 15month old daughter(yes she is cute. She looks like me :) ).

My current projects are:
88crx dx auto = not sure what i want to do with it. still bone stock
95 del sol vtec = pretty much stock few mods here and there
don't know which to start tossing my time and money into first, and time is a little short with having a toddler who loves to get herself into trouble.

c0d0r12 05-28-2007 10:37 AM

Welcome back! I'm new here and however I dont have a crx, but I guess I have the slightly larger brother, the ef hatchback (I need back seats...). Anyways, It's an 89 si w/ jdm b16a suited with boltons. Getting ready to implant a set of more aggressive cams for that vtec SMACK. Then i'm going to leave it alone b/c this car stuff is expensive! My name's Cody and i'm 18 and a resident of Columbia SC. Good to meet everyone.

Been here a while, been through many Hondas, could never make up my mind. Just bought a 91 CRX Si and it's a perfect match. Fits 6'4" white guy like a glove :) Peppy and nimble handling too!

Minho 06-07-2007 05:43 PM

Hi im a 26 year old Male I have a 90 crx with a jdm sohc zc in it. This is my first Honda/import. Due to my dad in the past ive owned muscle cars (1980 Malibu with a 350, S-10 RWD Blazer with a 383). I have worked with some friends on Hondas before. I am planning on doing a mpfi conversion (dont know why it wasnt done with the engine swap) soon then later on down the line turboing the CRX. I have a t3/t4 hybrid turbo, turbo manifold, downpipe, Intercooler, Intercooler tubing, blowoff valve, external waste gate, gauges, etc. I still need to get oil tap and return lines for the turbo, lower the compression, then get it in and get the ecu tuned. The crx also has a custom box for 3 12's in it that I am thinking about removing. Right now it is just primered but im thinking about getting it black after I finish the body work (a few rust spots, cut them out and welded metal underneath and filled it in some). I need some rims and tires(have stock blackies with no hub caps even), just something decent for now so if you live in MD and have a set you'll get rid of cheap let me know.

THE X 06-08-2007 06:08 AM

Hi guys,

My name is Dmitry and Im not new to Honda but I am new to the CRX. Me and a friend just bought an '87 Si last night with 77,000 original miles. The interior is immaculate but the outside will need some work. Picked it up for a wopping $500  . Clutch is even still good. This is my third Honda and its going to be a track rat.

Previous cars Ive had were a 1996 Integra and a 1995 M3.

Now I have a 2003 S2000 GPW/Tan all stock.

I was worried that there wouldnt be an abundant amount of mods for the '87 but looks like Im in luck. Hope to get out on the track ASAP!

Alright, I am not new to the whole forum scene. However, I recently purchased an 88 Honda CRX, which makes me a newbie to the Honda scene. My name is K.C. and as far as research is concerned I consider a forum among the best places to go. This is the first Honda forum I have joined and the community appears to be quite knowledgeable.

Here is some brief information about myself.

I like cartoons.
I like video games.
I go to college full time.
I work IT/MIS full time.
I study the Japanese language a lot (including as part of my college courses).
I enjoy working on cars.

I look forward to all of the helpful information that I'm sure the community has to offer.

Hey guys. I'm new to imports in general but picked up my '90 Civic LX cheap as a gas car. I can see why these cars are popular. Small, light and fun to drive. Which also leads me to the understanding why engine swaps are so popular. lol I don't see me fixing up this one, just cuz it's old and the body isn't great, but I definitely have the urge to find another "toy."

Anyways, I also am a very avid motorcyclist. I primarily ride a '92 FZR600, but also have an old '85 Kawi Eliminator 900 sitting in the garage.

And that's me.....nice to meet you. :D

jamned 04-22-2008 04:53 PM

Hi, my name's Eric and a few months ago I bought an 86 CRX si with the stock EW4 engine. I recently finished rebuilding it since it had some coolant issues and the last owner swapped on an incorrect head (from a carbureted d15a2...I recognized this since another car of mine has it--the CVCC chambers also say it shouldn't be on a fuel injected car).

I also bought an 85 CRX as a parts car, though it looks like it has a carbureted EW2 so it won't contribute any useful engine bay parts. I'm hoping to swap in a powerful Honda engine--either an H series, B18, LS/vtec or CR/vtec, but I have a lot more to research before I do.

Right now I'm a junior RF engineer in Los Angeles, but this isn't going to be my career for long. Skillwise, I'm pretty good with computers and math, and this is the third time I've taken apart an engine--though I've never disassembled the lower end. I'm hoping to learn how to weld and fab, so I can possibly fab/weld engine mounts, exhaust tubing and exhaust headers for all cars I plan on modifying.

1stGenCRXer 04-22-2008 06:14 PM

Jamned, you have set the bar high for yourself on the engines you're considering swapping in. All the options you laid out have the highest deck height you could try to deal with in such a tiny engine bay. I know from experience that any of the B16s are a tight fit, and really cut down your ground clearance with a JDM 4-1 header.

Of course, you're dealing with a very light platform, so just keep in mind that it doesn't take extreme power to make a very quick car.

I've got a fair amount of work done to my EW1 block with EW3 head ['85 DX block, '85 Si head], so about your comment about not having useful engine bay parts in your parts car, I can tell you the EW2 is an HF, and you're right, you don't want to use the block, head or pretty much anything from the long block is out for performance. You could swap out the 5th gear ratio from the HF tranny into your current car if you want to drop down your highway cruise RPM by quite a bit, though the best thing you could find yourself is an '85 Si complete transmission, it's the only one of the 1st gens with a higher FD ratio, which gives you a bit more torque off the line, and a better overall "feel" on the gear spacing.

I could go on and on, but you get the idea. You definately have a lot of learning and research to do being new to 1st Gens ;)

Welcome to the board.

maccrx 04-24-2008 08:56 PM

Hey Y'all I'm Don,
I'm new to forums, but I've had Hondas over the years (2 crx's & one beat-up 89 integra). My current baby is a 91 Civic DX that I'm making plans to upgrade (I'm not looking to build up a racer, but just to get some modern convenience to my daily driver).

I don't have a lot of mechanical experience but I can change my oil and my spark plugs if someone is silly enough to trust me w/ tools.

The car is in relatively good condition, there are a lot of things that need to be replaced this year. So I figure that now is the time to replace/upgrade and have fun w/ it. I'll do a little at a time, maybe one project a month or so, but not rush it.

Anyway, thanks for listening. Looking forward to the future and getting great ideas and solutions from you folks.

peace,
Dono'

Hi there! I joined this forum to find out all I can about an engine/trans combo I found. I realize it may not be a really popular idea, but I plan to install it in a two-wheel motorcycle I'm building (one of those projects that just won't leave me alone). It's a D15B2, and I was wondering how to find out what year car it came from, etc. I couldn't find a reference chart on the 'net, so here I am.
I'm a bike rider of over thirty years, a hot-rodder, and car racer. I work as a welder/fabricator, and live in a town of about 70 people in the mountains of Coplorado. I'd appreiate any help I can get. Thanks. Animal

jethrocreek 03-07-2009 07:46 PM

Hello

Hi all,
I'm a car nut from way back and got an okay deal on a 89 CRX already equipped with all the body goodies onboard, but the clutch was Completely TOASTED by an idiot who didn't know what the hell a clutch is for and toasted the pressure plate and flywheel to the point of total replacement and close to critical failure (I.E. clutch explosion) Clutch is now completely refinished and I am now considering next steps. It is obvious that at one time in this CRX's life it was loved, there are frame alterations and body mods to account for a turbo and an intercooler (Both long gone unfortunatly) I am fairly sure that in its recent history of abuse the motor is likely not the original and I surfed here looking for ideas, Id's (motor, head, tranny etc.) and any other info you guys could hand over to a gearhead with no previous experience with imports or "pocket rockets" This is my first honda and I'd love to see her in good condition again. Any suggestions? I do know a turbo is in the future, but not till I can decide on motor replacement/rebuild and am hoping I found a good home here with you guys.

Thanks guys.

PS After digging a bit I see that the D15b6 8 valve sohc was stock, but where do i find the stamp on the motor to 100% id this motor?

After RECHECKing I realised that I have a D15B2 16 valve which is a bit nicer.

sup people good to know there are other crx junkies out there. currently owner of an 87' rex Si mugen.it has had full suspension work done and with no motor in it the front sway bar is approx. 3 inches from the ground. it has fully adj. camber kit with all red poly bushings.i think it was used as a circle track race car and think it had an old carburated b-17 in it. but now its gutted minus dash,Si seats, i have a d-16z6 i was thinking of building for it but does anyone know what would be the easiest swap to put in this car??for max power and least budget of course!lol. whats the easiest because it's gonna require a full harness swap/new body harness and motor harness.climate controls not necessary but lights are a must lol.(hard to go fast in the dark). any help will be greatly appreciated. also i own a 91' rex HF i am currently building a mini me swap for should be running within a month. serious posts only please from knowledgeable people about the 87' thx.

Hello all,

The 1990 Honda CRX was the first car I purchased on my own without any help from my parents. I bought a Barbados Yellow Si with 90 miles on it, and I still have it today. It's been broken in to several times, and even stolen twice, but now I have a great car alarm and hope to have fewer troubles. The engine died after it was stolen, and I put a 120 hp Japanese market engine in it for a while, but eventually rebuilt the original 108 hp and restored it to the car. I have a torsen differential, lightened flywheel, removable steering wheel, steering column lock, and super-light SSR wheels. There used to be a nice stereo with 10-disc changer, but that got stolen.

I also have a Berlina Black S-2000 AP1 from the very first year, and I got it with only 7 miles on the odometer! I was obviously a Honda fan by that time, and did everything I could to get one of the first S-2000s in my area. I also still have that car and have upgraded the floor mats based on recommendations here.

I love this site, and although I don't use it very often I still come here for the best after market products. I'd like to meet some Seattle area Honda fans, so send me a PM if you're in the area.

Brian
