Default car wont go above 3500rpm

ok so heres the deal. i have a 91 civic lx 4door, the car wont rev above 3500rpm once it gets there its almost like there is a governor stopping it. the engine with the petal to the floor will rev up and stop at 3500 ant the go down to 3000 and back up again. the check engine light is on! this started last night. a friend suggested i disconect the battery and that seemed to fix it untill today. when starting it will crank for a few seconds then start. so whats up.

Disconnecting the battery clears the ECU's internal data. (you can also clear it by pulling the fuse for the ECU.)

One of the sensors is bad or not connected properly (bad connection, short in the wire) to the ECU (or you have a bad engine ground).

Look under the carpet where your front passenger's feet go. That's where the ECU is.

When the check engine light is on, the ECU's LED will flash.

Count the flashs that will give you the error code. (there can be more than one code displayed at a time; flash-flash-flash, pause, flash-flash-flash-flash-flash, pause, repeat = code 3 and code 5).

Lookup the code in your repair manual and work from there.

so i checked the ecu under the passenger side carpet, and it blinks 8 short blinks. so i guess that would be a code 8. the guy at the junk yard thinks its a TPS throttle position sensor. so what does code 8 mean?

code 8 is the Top Dead Center Sensor in the distributor - usually means you need a new distributor
