TDC marks on crankshaft always mean TDC compression stroke?

TDC marks on crankshaft always mean TDC compression stroke?
Hello, when the marks on the crankshaft sprocket (one the timing belt rides on) and the engine case line up, they always mean TDC on compression stroke? or could it be tdc exhaust stroke?
