you can do what you want... it kinda depends on the low beam bulb type... like, ive never heard of putting HID's into an H3 housing... just because the bulb is so stubby... but if it takes an H1 or H4 (which they typically do) then you'll be fine... just get a matching HID kit, or custom mount some D2R/D2S bulbs.

I put HID's into H3 projector housings... it's not worth it. Light output is horrible.
I tried 3 different sets of projector headlight housings, the fact is those projectors are really bad. Your best bet is to retro-fit REAL HID prjoectors from a BMW, Audi, or S2000. I did it and it's excellent lighting.

the best way is to retrofit some audi or s2000 projectors in place of the aftermarket low beam projector. The audi a4/s4 would probably work best because it has great mounting points and is one of the smallest hid projectors out there. The s2000 would be my ideal choice because it is a better projector but they are much harder to retrofit because there are no mounting points. Also, the Audi projectors (valeo makes them) are the cheaper projectors out there, bosche, hella or kioto makes higher quality projectors than valeo. You find those on bmw's, mercedes, and exotic cars.

i tried to put oem maxima hids into my 99 civic halo projectors. the hole was too small. there wasn't enough clearance, for the oem hid bulbs. I emailed a few sellers on ebay about their h1 kit (because the halo kit converts civic h4 into h1 bulbs for the projectors). Most of them said that it won't fit. but there was one that said it did, and he wanted $400 for a 8000K kit. I'm still in the process of finding out more about the mod. I really dont' want to tear up a pair of $180 projector headlights to try to retrofit audi projectors in them...any suggestions?

Well, the guy trying to sell you an 8000k bulb is bullshit. There are only two real kelvin temperatures for hid, 4100k or 5800k (philips markets them at 6000k) Also, the only hid bulbs worth purchasing are philips or osram. They are german made and make all stock hid systems (hella makes the ballast). Any other bulb that you can find would have a blue film that only makes it dimmer. also, the 8000k bulbs would probably not last any more than 300 hours compared to over 3000 for the philips or osram. The only way you can fit the hid bulbs into your h3 housing would be to use a dremel and custom mount them. Even then, the output would be horrible....your stock lights would give a much better output. Maybe you can try using an hid kit that sylvania makes, it mounts anywhere that you can put an aftermarket projector and gives much better lighting with your stock headlight.

the hid would be brighter than the h3 projectors. the only way i can think that the hid would be worst is because of the cheap projectors lens. light pattern would scatter all over the road because i'm pretty sure they didn't take the time to research on beam pattern when the made the projectors.
