help me please!
 

when i turn the volume up past 20 on my head unit, my sub cuts out. when i popped my trunk i noticed my lighting cap was only showing only 6.7 volts instead of 14 volts what could be causing this?:confused:

it shows 6.7 all the time, or just while playing music?

who did the install for you? i know of problems like this before from inexperianced installers or half ass installers. no offence if you installed it yourself. The amp is pulling power off the cap to cover the potential voltage drop when your sub hits a low deep note. The reason your cap is showing 6.7volts and not 12 - 14.4volts is because it was not charged properly. Go to your local electronic store or radio shack and pick up a 30 Ohm resistor. you must DISCHARGE YOUR CAP. heres how:

1) Dissconnect your cap from your audio system
2) WITH PLIERS, connect one end of the resistor to POS and the other to NEG. the resistor gets hot so make sure you use pliers.
3) use a DMM (digital volt meter) place red on POS terminal of cap and BLACK to negative terminal of cap make sure it reads as close to ZERO (0) as possible.

You have sucessfully discharged the cap. now you must charge the cap properly.

CHARGING THE CAPACITOR

1)Connect capacitor negative terminal to ground
2) Place the 30 Ohm resistor inline with your main 12v Line, secure it to the terminal so you dont have to hold it.
3) Start your car and make sure NOTHING on the car is turned on (heat etc)
4) Test voltage on cap, your DMM red to pos and black to neg. you should see it slowly charge from 0v to 12.7 volts.
5) leaving the volt meter connected with the resistor inline, go and rev the car a little so the cap can charge more and make sure the cap reads around 13.8volts; you can stop at 11v, but its best to charge it as much as possibe - strive for 13v.
6) turn off car, remove resistor, reconnect the amps postive wire and appropriate wires. now your cap is functioning PROPERLY.
