Default Which crossover to use, amp or headunit?

Well, basically as the title states...someone who knows their shit help me out here. I've got an Alpine CDA-9815 which has i-Personalize, so I can adjust the crossover and time-correction settings on my computer. My sub's hooked up to an Alpine MRP-M350 amp which has "Bass EQ" and a 50-200Hz LP filter. My 4 channel has HP filters as well but those settings can be adjusted on the HU too.

I know that it's unnecessary to use both crossovers at once (redundant) but which would be the better and/or more efficient type to use, the crossover on the amp or the one on the headunit? The i-Personalize adjustments are much more convenient than running back and forth from the amps, but wouldn't using the filters on the amp mean that power's not being wasted on lower (or higher) frequencies? Or does it not matter at all..

I would use the decks. I have my amps crossovers at Full right now.

Cool, it's definitely easier to make those adjustments from the head unit anyway. I'm still confused though, what do you mean when you say they're set to full?

Full is like OFF. HighPass lets the higher than freqs go through. LowPass lets the lower than freqs go through. And Full allows all of them to go through. Of course not all will go through because any signal going to the amp is already filtered through the on-board crossovers.

Ahh, that makes sense. It's better to let the head unit regulate full signal then rather than a filtered signal. I plan on ignoring the Bass EQ too since I can adjust that from the HU. Yeah can you tell I've never previously had a sub installed? Thanks Will..

I have the 9815 with the time correction, crossover and parametric EQ. I'm still tweaking it and trying to cut off the fronts at the right point. I haven't quite got it figured out yet, especially the db/oct slopes. Any input?

You dont know how to use the unit, or you dont know how to set the crossover numbers? If you dont know where to crossover at, start at 80 hertz and move up. See what you like the best.

"WiLL" just not cuttin it for you anymore? Ha anyway...

I know how to use the unit perfectly fine, I'm just describing the settings that I'm adjusting that I'm unfamiliar with. I drove around for about an hour though today adjusting everything and I got it pretty figured out. Almost hit a few parked cars and a couple people but it was in the name of sound quality. They'd understand.
