How do i fill the trans fluid?

I have a 98 civic LX 5speed. I cant find where to fill the trans fluid. My chiltons doesn't show where to fill it, but it showed where to drain it!! Please help.

Can someone tell me how this fill and drain works? and how do i know when my trans fluid is full? It doesn't have a dip stick.

Thanks in advance.

Try the Civic board??

Anyway, the normal Honda way of doing it is like this...

Look where the right-side axle goes into the transmission. Directly below (6-oclock) from the axle is a bolt with a square hole for a 3/8 socket extension. That's the drain bolt.

Now look at about 9-oclock from the axle. There's a bolt that's bigger than all the other bolts around. That's the fill hole. There's no dipstick. You fill it right up to the level of the fill hole, so it's almost starting to drip out.

not 100% sure about the civic, but if you do have a filler bolt, it should be stamped ATF right on the nut. I had a haynes for my accord and it too didnt tell me where. I had to look for it. On my accord it is near the top of the tranny case.

also, use the dipstick to check the fluid level, like it says in the manual b/c i inadvertently overfilled mine last time.

He said it's a 5=speed. Automatic Hondas usually fill thru the dipstick hole.

oops. true. but my 2000 lx v6 coupe is auto and has the ATF marked bolt. It was a !@%^!@*^@! to crack open though. and so was the tranny drain bolt

OK, I never have messed with a Honda V-6 tranny. I didn't know it had a fill bolt different from the dipstick.

Yup, fill bolt it is indeed. But, it is easier to fill through the dipstick.

Thanks everyone, you all helped out a lot. I will post on the civic page next time. This was my first post and didn't realize i was putting it in the wrong area. Thanks again.

You put in the drain bolt, remove the larger NON 3/8" ratchet drive bolt ( level check bolt) and fill it through the reverse switch hole or the vehicle speed sensor hole. Use a long funnel.
