RPM Question

My daughter's 99 Accord, 4 cyl., automatic, seems to make a LOT of engine noise at highway speeds. At 60 mph it's turning about 3000. Is this about right? It sounds a little high.

That's a little high i'd think. I'm at 3k at 80mph in 5th in my manual. Do the automatics have selectable overdrive?? If so, makee sure it in overdrive. Any check engine lights???

That's me too. 3000 at 80MPH. I don't think you would hit 3000 at 60MPH even in 4th. Something's up.

I'm not sure what you mean by selectable overdrive.

It's a button, usually on the transmission shifter handle, that selects between overdrive or no overdrive. I'm not sure where it is but it should be on or near the shifter.

Gotcha. I'll have to check on that when she gets home. The car doesn't have an owners manual, so she may have missed that. Thanks.

I havn't driven an auto 6th Gen on the highway, or much at all for that matter.

I see no mention of an overdrive button in my owners manual.

No indicator lights on?? Might want to take it to AutoZone and have the codes read anyway. The light bulb that lights up the CEL(check engine light) can burn out.

uhh....

take the car out on the highway again.... reach 60mph.... then shift into D3 and note the rpm.... then shift back to D4 and note the rpm.

if the rpms dnesnt change... then the tranny is stopping at 3rd gear.

^^Would that throw a code?? I'd think it would. Maybe the bulb is burned out:dunno:
