'89 accord that suddenly revss up2 4000 & more
Hello to all,
you wouldn't beleive my supprize at finding this site. Then again, I should have gotten on the net and punched this up a long time ago. h:
Alright, heres the problem ,if anyone can help, 1989 Accord LX 178,000 + miles, car's been well cared for, in great shape. Shortly after starting,,or sometimes rite away, the engine will shoot up to about 3000 rpm and pulse up to 4500rpm. it stays that way for a while , 10 - 15 min. then will start to come back down slowly. Sometimes goosing the accellurator helps, sometimes worse. I was thinking that it mite be the thottle controler, but which one is it? How much is it ? Could it be anything else? Gentellmen, and ladies please help I'm lost and starting to get confuseded. Thanks for your time and help. It is greatly apprishiated.

I'm not sure if 3rd gens had a fast idle control valve or an idle air control valve, but if they do it's probably one of those. Also, a good cleaning of the EGR ports would help.

A common problem on 86-89 Accords is a faulty Frequency Valve C. If your Accord is stuck on fast idle then that's probably the cause. I had to replace mine several years ago. I bought a used one from Matta Motors(www.mattamotors.com) for around $40 and it solved the problem immediately.
Do you have the Factory Service Manual? If so, Frequency Valve C is easy to locate. It's located along the passenger's side fender well in the engine compartment. Sometimes a slight wack with a hand tool on the side of it will get the engine to kick down. To test it you'll need a vacuum pump gauge.
