Default 94-97 5th Gen ATF

My friend has a '97 LX auto sedan, and we're going to do both of his axles soon. part of the process involves draining the ATF, so we are wondering what kind of ATF we should use.

I know my 98-02 6th gen REQUIRES Honda ATF, or else the transmission would slip. Hoever, I vaguely remember seeing that the older 94-97 5th gens used dexron III (recommended).

So, what ATF is required/recommended for 5th gens? Dexron III or Honda ATF? What does it say in the Helms service manual?

i'm pretty much sure that you have to use honda ATF
it is dexron III, but has certain additives in it that regular/store bought dexron III doesn't
as far as i know

you only have to use honda ATF in 98+ accords though i suggest you use it. i think its best for the longevity of the tranny since they are so crappy.

i did not use honda atf when i change the tranny fluid this yr, and the second i started driving and when switching from drive to park or to reverse... it doesnt feel good at all so i went back and change the tranny fluid but with honda atf and my tranny once again is smooth. i have a 96accord so i really think honda ATF should be first and only choice.

did you use dexron III? i always used dexron III in the 91,92,95, and 96 accords my parents and i used to own and never noticed poor shifting. though i never used honda ATF to actually see if there was a difference.

I prefer the OEM fluid over Mobil 1 even on my Hondas. This is for my 92, and 96 Accords, and my TL-S.
