+2 Tire Sizing
 

Thinking about picking up an upgrade tire/wheel package and upgrade the stock rims from 15" to 17". Anyone know the proper size for 17" rims for Accord V6 Sedan. The stock size is 205/65/15. Well, the TL-S rims for the same car comes in 215/40/17. This is the recommended tire size from tirerack, victoria, etc. But if I am to +2 size the tire, wouldn't I need 225/45/17?

acura type s wheels are 215/50/17. plus sizing is a good start, but does the predicted outcome a close match to the stock size? the key is to make sure the rolling diameter on the new wheels match as close as possible to the stock wheels. just do some math.

I'd go with 18's...mine are 225/40R18. That's almost exactly the same diameter as the I4 combo...I know V6 is just a hare larger, but most run 225/40's with the 18's. If you do get 17's, be careful what offset you get. It's hard to find them with high enough offset.

225/45/17 is the size you would need if you were rollin on an I4 like myself... by calculations you would be 2% too fast... with 215/45/17 you'll be going 3.4% too fast... but given the measurements you provided your best bet would be 235/45/17 would put you at .6% too fast, but closest you're gonna get. When your speedometer reads 60pmh you will actually be going 59.6mph... not too much of a difference...

I already have the 1.5" drop. (Check the sig) Too many potholes in the city to worry about going any lower. As for the 18" rims, they are too expensive and the roads here will rip them apart. Sorry, but 17 is fine with me

Are TL-S tires 215/50/17 or are they 215/40/17?

Well, 205/65/15 plus 2 sizing brings me to 225/45/17.... Someone help me out here!??!?!

I'm in the same situation as you, I live in NYC, and in fact I have the same identical car as you. 2000 Accord EX V6 sedan. I have a drop of 1.75 with Konig Monsoon rims wrapped in 215-50-17. They rub, so be careful. I'd recommend a higher offset than mine (i'm at 40mm).

Acura TL Type S rims are wrapped with 215-50-17 tires. I had 225/45/17 but they rubbed even more so than they do now. I'm either going to invest in a set of Acura rims or have my body guy do something funky with the panels so I quit rubbing.

I've got CL-S rims/tires on my ride lowered 1.5" F and R.
No rubbing and the offset is 45. I was thinking about getting some sumitomo 225/45/17 but was afraid of the wheel gap getting larger with the lower profile tires, right now the 215/50/17 keep the wheel gap nice and I can haul 4 fat asses(wife's nastyass cousins) in my ride without rubbing.

17" acura type s rims have a +55mm offset....which is pretty high considering the narrow rim widths on both cars (7" for cl-s, and 6.5" for tl-s)! high offset + narrow rim width = lots of room for wider tires and no rubbing (generally). so putting 225/45 on these rims should be fine.

stock 205/65/15 ~> rolling diameter is 25.49"
plus sizing 225/45/17 ~> rolling diameter is 24.97"
it's kinda off so try bigger profile, 225/50 ~>25.85"
too high, so try narrower width, 215/50 ~> 25.46" (almost right on!)

however if you went even wider with 235, then the profile could be lower. also rim width can be used to determine tire width...so if you went with 215/50, 215 is better suited for rims narrower than 7". if you went 7.5" you might want 225...235 for 8s.

I didn't really think of that... but... right now I'm dropped 2inches front and back. my stock measurements, which alas I'm still rolling on, are: 195/65/15. When I trade these in to +2 size, 225/45/17s, if the diameter is exactly the same, is there any reason to worry about rub? I don't really know about measurements of inside the wheel well... didnd't really think about it, but if the overall measurements from the plus size rims and stock rims are the same there shouldn't really be anything to worry about, should there?

rolling diameter is one thing, but rubbing is another which is related with rim width and rim offset. stock is 6.5 wide and about a 50ish offset...so if you keep the 17s with 6.5" width and 50ish offset, then you should not have a problem. but with 225s, you might want to go with a 7" or 7.5" wide rim so that necessitates getting a higher offset. the funny thing is that stocks usually come way high on narrow rims, so 50 can also accomodate 7.5" wide rims. more than likely you will see low 40s. if you get 7.5s, stick with a 45ish offset and no lower than 42.

Thanks for the help. So it's 215/50/17. What tires to get then? Want the Bridgestone RE950, but they don't make it in that size.

wow... Mac.. you are a bad ass... How you come to know all this stuff? anyways i've been trying to search for perfect set of rims (inexpensive/lightweight/lookgood). Based upon my budget I was thinking I would get a set of velox vx-8s... but now... i don't they'll work out for me with a width of 7.5 and offset of 40... looks like it's back to the drawing board.

thanks! i've had a couple of cars now and have been through it all and still go through it as i switch cars...not to mention, i'm a rim fanatic!!! :D trust me, it's better to wait so you can find a wheel and tire set that fits perfectly (ie, not rub when lowered, or rub very little) than it is to rush and get something less than perfect.

oofrost has some velox rims on his 6G sedan...he can tell you if they work or not.

195/65/15 has a diameter of 24.98 inches...so if you refer to my earlier post with the diameters, 225/45 (24.97") is right on! from the tire size, 225 width means you can use a 7" or 7.5" rim width. and if you are using these widths, you want at least a 42 but 45 is better and pretty common on widely available wheels or you can buy nicer wheels that come as high as a 50 offset.

so from stock tire size, you pretty much figured out what you need
- 225/45/17 tires
- 17x7 or 17x7.5 wheels
- 45ish offset

so a 42 off set is no good? and 40 is out of question huh? kuz groupbuy selling 40 offset and ebay sellin 42 offset.... this sucks... haha

so if have 17x7 with 40 offset runnin on 215/45/17s would i rub on a H&R 1.75 drop (frnt) 1.5 drop (back) on a 2002 accord coupe?

Mac what's the equation for finding the overall wheel diameter? i'm too lazy to go look it up

get the wheel size, x/y/z
- take tire width X and divide by 25.4 to convert from mm to inches (1)
- take (1) and multiply by aspect ratio Y as a percent (2)
- take (2) and multiply by 2 because there are 2 sections of sidewall as you calculate the rolling diameter (3)
- take (3) and add rim diameter Z to get the overall rolling diameter in inches

X/25.4=(1)
(1)*0.Y=(2)
(2)*2=(3)
(3)+Z=overall rolling diameter

since you are getting somewhat narrow 7" wide rims, offsets don't have to be as high, but this is like on the low end too. if you can try getting a 42 if possible and 45 would definitely be better.

well i have 215/45/17 on my 5th gen and they fit just fine even though recommend was 225/45/17 or so it was just too big and made turning hard especially since my car is dropped
