Default attn: 5G squad with HID's

Anyone with 4100k or 4300k kits have melted housings? Im asking to especially those with DIY black housings. Im wondering if the paint will peel off inside due to the heat. (I have high temp 500 degree paint if it matters) Im thinking of retro fitting s2k projectors and a Phillips HID kit or whatever I can get. Anyone with any helpful info out there? :happysad:

hrmm... naw i got 6000k and its all good. HIDs are only 35w so produce much less amount of heat. But then again it also depends on what kinda paint you used to paint your headlights.... I used some black patio grill paint rated at something like 3000F, so yea i don't think mines meltin off.

HIDs produce less heat than regular bulbs. You wont have a problem with melted housings unless you have some wiring problems.

The S2k projectors are completely sealed, not open topped. The S2k projector itself will get hot, but the whole thing acts as a heatsink and helps dissapate heat. When it's been running for 5 minutes you definitly won't be able to hold the projector in your hand but it shouldn't get hot enough to melt anything or mess up paint unless maybe if you painted the actual outside of the projector (but it's already black anyway). My assemblies are extremely cramped and no problems whatsoever with s2k projectors. Go ahead and get to it man!

I have a Catz 4500 hid set and I have no problems with melting housings.
Make sure your bulbs are seated properly in the housing, though.

Your gonna have difficulty with S2k projectors. First of all they are fairly rare and if you do find a set they are usually about 200-300 bucks. Secondly, our headlights are fairly small and the s2k projectors are unusually large you might have a problem with fitment. Good luck.

the s2k's are not the smallest projectors in the world. they look small but 80% of it is hidden behind the housing, take it out and it'll cover the entire low beam and a portion of the highs in our housings. and yes there is such thing as crappy HID's. examples are the cheap chiwainese brands and cars with OEM reflectors with HID bulbs crammed into them. BTW... HID kits are illegal as of last year. I wouldnt purchase them unless you want the law all over your ass!

No difficulty finding s2k projectors here. Every junkyard in SoCal has at least a couple wrecked s2k's and Ive been quoted as low as 100 for both projectors and 160 for both headlight housings.

Ive seen s2k projectors in 5th gen housings. Fitment looked pretty good from what I saw. Im also open to other projectors from BMW and Audi.

And the legality thing. Police here arent so bad as people blow them up to be. As long as youre driving normal they wont have a reason to pull me over. And if I do get a ticket its only a $10 fix it and it takes 15 minutes for me to change out my black housings with USDM housings.
