b18b1 vs type r .. road course
 
heres the scenario...

same 98 cx h/b.. no ac.. no power nothing..

6 grand including price of the engine into both cars

b18b1 turbo on one side..
type r on the other..

both built to their maximum potential from $6k

same suspension mods.. GC coilovers KYB agx shocks.. all strut bars all tie bars big sway bars..

both on falken azenis..

both equal drivers..

and one more thing.. no stickers on either car :p

which one will pull a better time on a 1 minute autocross course?
2 minute autocross course?

the reason im asking this is i always hear turbo cars are no good on road courses.. just wondering why.. i would like to understand it once and for all.. thanks

One word: LAG! Ever driven a turbo car? Turbo's shine on stretches where you can rip through the high RPM's.

My prediction, the turbo b18b owns the type r on the drag. Dunno bout autox.

you might be a little confused. A turbo car can be very fast on an open road course, but they suck for autocross (a lot tighter than a road course). In an autocross you never really have an opportunity to lay on the gas for more than a second or two, so in a turbo car, lag is a killer.

That scenario, the N/A car would definitely whoop up.... On a more open course (like a road course with wider turns and bigger straights) it would be a totally different story.

its frustrating.. one day im set on building an autoX setup.. the other day im set on building a fast drag car..

I'm gonna delve a little deeper here.

An autocross course is a very tight course layed out in a big parkinglot where you drive on a course around a bunch of cones. Speeds on an autocross course rarely exceed 65mph. Its more a test of the drivers ability to execute a bunch of tight manouvers, one after another.

A road course is like a regular race track, with long straights, and turns and chicanes and whatnot. Top speeds for the kind of car youre describing would be more in the 100-125 range on a road course.

Turbo cars struggle in autocross because they lack the instantaneous power needed in a really tight course. Since you never reach full boost, but are often at full vacuum (lag) you really can't take advantage of the turbo's power.

On a road course, you can stomp the gas for up to ten secons, depending on the track. In this scenario, the turbo car could take advantage of its peak power, and would be faster than the N/A car.

the type R over the LS in autocross considering both drivers are equal. the type R has shorter gears.

Just get another car, and build 2 so you can have both.

yeah i may end up doing that but its gonna be a while..

i guess ill build the civic for autocross ..

type r or gs-r motor..

bah knowing me.. tomorrow ill probably be back on track with my b18b1 turbo plans..

maybe i should do a b20 vtec how would that hold up in the autocross and drag areas..

but realistically i might do this.. what do u guys think

mini me vtec head swap onto my existing d16y7 engine..

swap on a y8 head..

but the thing is the car has 105k miles .. should i do it? or will it be a waste.. some suspension mods.. falken azenis.. autocross it.. then set it up for drag when i do a full swap later on.. if i decide to keep this car

If I had it my way, I would do a B18C1 turbo, but I'm not planning on doing auto-x. (Unfortunately, I can't afford it cause I'm saving for an engagement ring.) But that my engine plans for the distant future.
