Timing belt/water pump - replace on mileage or time?
Just noticed that Honda recommends replacing the timing belt and (possibly) water pump at 105,000 miles OR 7-8 years. My 2001 EX has 95,000 miles on it but I've never had these replaced. Bought this car from the dealer at about 70,000 and don't know about the history of the vehicle. Had to replace both front struts, air filter box and had some brake problems but no drivetrain/engine problems so far. Should I consider doing the timing belt and/or water pump now or should I wait til 105,000 miles? It could be another year or longer before I hit 105,000, I don't drive a whole lot.

Always replace both at the same time. This will save you additional time and money down the road when the water pump inevitably fails. That said, if you have the means to do your TB/WP ahead of time, you are close enough to go ahead and do it. Especially considering the age of your vehicle.

I would change it if you don't know the history especially if an idiot owner had it before you and ran it to redline everyday and let the coolant dry up like the previous owner of my car did (which is why the radiator cracked, headgasket leak and weird idling issues).
On my 00 Civic Si when it turned 75k I changed the timing belt, water pump and bunch more things to bring peace of mind.

One more question then, should I take it to the dealer to do this maintenance since it is a major but routine job or should I feel OK taking it to the local mechanic?

A knowledgeable import mechanic should have no problems doing this.

Depends On how hard it was driven.
I usually replace at 100k. I believe the standard honda spec says replace at 60k.
I've replaced several hondas at 100k. the belts always looked good when I took them out. But that doesn't say much. I also drove a 88' CRX till the belt snapped. It was the original timing belt and I drove it to 130K and it finally snapped. Luckily no valves were bent. You don't wanna go there. Its another whole world of problems.
At 100k I would put timing belt replacement and water pump replacement on high priority.
If its your daily diver get it done before you hit 110k. To be safe.
