1998 honda civic check engine light came on but what does the code mean?
1998 honda civic check engine light came on but what does the code mean? I took it by AutoZone and they told me its code is P0135 and they just gave me a ticket stub what the faults are... Showed "A/F sensor 1 heater system malfunction probable cause". Not sure what A/F stands for but it did not specify what exactly to replace.. I have been looking online and it seems to show a oxygen sensor but not sure which one? I overheard the AutoZone guy asking another person about the code and the other guy said sensor 1 means before the converter... Can anyone post any links to what the code stands for that is causing my check engine like to come in? I have tried to disconnect battery and reconnect and the check engine light came back in so if its an easy fix I would just like to get it fixed.. Please post you guys... Thanks..

A/F sensor = O2 sensor, sensor one means the one in your exhaust manifold, not the one in/after the cat converter. Heater system is the circuit that brings the sensor up to operating temps quickly. The long and the short of it is you should replace your primary O2 sensor, the one in the exhaust manifold.

the guy is right. whey you change this, may i suggest to do it when the exhaust is totally cold. theres an issue of the exhaust manifold on this cars cracking right where the oxygen sensor is at (pre cat).

THank guys... I know for a fact it is that o2 sensor now.. I removed shroud and sure enough my exhaust manifold is cracked again.. This has happened to me before... Anyone have one for sale...

Too bad ya missed the recall, 96 and 97 civics were covered for 14 years, 150k miles for the headers due to a california lawsuit that ended in this wierd TSB.
What it MEANS is that the circuit has a problem. It can be the oxygen sensor, but it may be worth it to double check. The ECT or Engine Coolant Temperature sensor could be giving a wrong reading, meaning something else could be causing it to screw up, wiring, etc, though its more likely to be the sensor, it could be a loose wire or somethin.
