Tony's Hatch Project

(little delayed, this waz over the weekend)

Alright figured i'd share some of this with you guys, it's gonna be a lot of work but i'm gonna be building my self a new daily driver. Reason being, i wanted a hatchback instead of my current coupe daily. That & there was no way i was gonna boost the d15b7 motor that was in my coupe so i looked around and got ahold of jakes old coupe with a d16z6 motor in it & tracked down a hatchback shell that was in pretty good shape body wise & i'm gonna be putting these things together.

Here's the wrecked up coupe. More suspension damage and tweaked body than anything, but has a good motor in it.

The Hatchback shell is decent body wise but is going to take a lot of work because someone cut the main harness all up. I'll be transfering pretty much everything to the hatch.

- has steering rack but not installed, it was in the back
- main harness is fawked
- missing a fender & rear bumper ( i'll pull the fender from the coupe, i ordered the rear bumper already)
- no axles
- no interior other than back half
- no headlights
- tails were in a box
- ect.

you'll get more details as the project progresses.

cable is fubared for the glass in the rear, so it won't latch yet.

I spent today getting the garage ready to do the job, the rhino is back on the ground & ready to rip, and the the left bay is ready so the work will begin tomarrow after it warms up out there.

Did some prep work to the bay saturday night, tryin to get it ready for the transplant. Cut the rest of the wiring out that i'm not gonna utilize & painted it up.

Sunday's work consisted of stripping the shit out of the coupe. I'd like to say that jake is a lucky guy, for all the shit that i found in that thing that was loose that could have caused death, i'm amazed that he's alive! We worked on this thing pretty much all day, we got all the interior out, the dash & all the wiring, including the main harness. Pulled the e-brake assembly, pulled shiftlinkage & motor, headlights bumper, fenders, ect. Pulled power mirriors & door harness's. There not really much left to this thing anymore!

The main harness, yes, i actually know where all those plugs go! http://www.cruxmotorsports.com/forum...icon_smile.gif

more to come. not sure how much time i'll have this week to work on this thing but more updates will come as i get the work done.

monday night update:

tonight i pulled the heater core, blower motor & duct work so that i could get to the firewall and pull the remainder of the main harness.

once all that was done, i installed the main harness from the coupe:

after i pulled all the wires through the firewall and ran everything where it had to go, i installed the dash.

durring tonights's adventures i noticed something that i'd classify as EXTREAMLY STUPID! IDK why the hell someone would do this but they used a hole saw to drill out the spots where the seats are supposed to mount to.. Now i'm gonna have to fix that shit! Dammit!

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...8/100_2918.jpg

Also noticed that someone cut the damn bracket from the cradle that is supposed to hold the passenger side of the stearing rack.. now your thinkin ohh well he has the donor car.. just change the cradle.. hell no!! theres now way i'm puttin that much time into that when i know one of those bolts is gonna give me the finger! I'm probably just gonna fab my own bracket & box it in. I'm sure i'll post pix when i get to this!

There are always un-forseen issues that will arrise when working with cars.. it's just the way it goes!

alright.. all up to speed now. Started Saturday we are now on monday.. lets see how long it take to get this thing all done.

wish my bay looked like that, what did you clean with, and how much sanding did it take on prep?

if your refering to the engine bay.. took a shop vac, 10min of skuff with scotch brite pad.. & about 10 bux in materials. I used duplicolor primer and a can of dupli-color black high temp paint.

not a big deal.

why the fuck would you put in the dash before you sprayed the interior/exterior. Wouldn't it be easier to spray it all while it is gutted and naked :oh:

personman93 Dec 9, 2008 06:08 PM

i wish i had the knowhow to do things like this.

did you not see the pix of the mess in the garage due to all the parts.. i don't have the space man.. gonna have to be together first. I'm not painting the interior, i'll leave out the stuff that matters around the edges.

Tuesday's nightly update:

ok well i started off tonight by putting in the steering rack to eye up the the stabilizing mount that im gonna build. Looks like i've got plenty of room to work in there so i'm gonna go ahead and move on, i'll build the mount around the rack later.

from there i moved on to putting in the steering column and wheel, it was a slight pain hold it up and bolting it by my self but, i got it done.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...8/100_2920.jpg

Then i decided it was time to fix the cables and install the lever's so that i can pop the hatch and fuel door.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...8/100_2923.jpg

Hatch poper:

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...8/100_2928.jpg

The other cables went well so i figured i'd do the last cable and install a hood latch and hook that up.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...8/100_2926.jpg

The mirrors were laying in my way so i figured i'd put those on and wire them up later, they are power mirrors and i've already transfered that part of the harness so i may as well utilize them.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...8/100_2929.jpg

Being that the dash is comming along, i went for the gauge cluster.. when i saw the discusing rice below the plastic cover.. i just couldn't take it.. heres the before/after

With Rice:
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...8/100_2930.jpg

Without Rice:
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...8/100_2932.jpg

ohh & speaking of the interior peices & rice.. i just can't deal with this.. it's gonna probly have to be trashed and i'll visit the local salvage yard.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...8/100_2933.jpg

Here was the end result of the nigth..

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...8/100_2935.jpg

I was pretty pleased, i think i got alot done tonight & hope that tomarrow is nearly as productive.
