One inlet was sawed off(very easy) to make it straight and allow the pipiing from the turbo to line up. Piping was fexible exhaust tubing (not the most efficient) from Autozone- cut to fit and VERY cheap. Couplers were obtained very cheaply from the plumbing section of Home Depot. All work was done by me -except my dad did my fan. The fan is as sturdy as it gets. Ghetto Supastar! :) Any questions? :D |
That is ****in' bad...can you post pics with the front end?
What kind of turbo set-up are you running? |
Nice.

its always nice to see DIYers:)

hehe.. neat.

Oh, the fan is hooked up to turn on via switch which is hooked up to ignition. I figured that a side mount doesn't get as much flow as a front mount so I mounted an oil cooler fan (perfect size as you can see :) ) to get more flow through it. Apexi 92-95 turbo kit. APEXi kit rules....btw mantis what rpms are you getting full boost at in 1st and 2nd gear? It seems like i hit full boost a LOT sooner in the higher gears when i'm going moderately fast. Didn't you used to have a starion FMIC? |

Guess what I get on Wednesday? New intercooler ... hehe, this is the same exact size. Except, mine will be the XS-Engineering one and this is the APEXI one. http://turbogsr.com/jinx1.jpg

It doesn't matter much to me because I am running stock exhaust system which puts more lag on the spool up. I think you're referring to bret(?) or something with the HX. I've read that the starion is more inefficient than a stock eclipse. I guess that's why the eclipse guys never get the starion one (that's what I heard). Yea, the APEXI kit does rule though. |
I miss my car. I'm ripping her apart to make her go 10psi-daily. :(

DIY own! very nice ghetto fab job, if it works, looks can come last.

So are you getting a new intercooler to replace the one you rigged up with the fan? If not, can I make a suggestion? That fan is not going to do anything for you. You need to seal the air gap between the intercooler and the fan or it's not going to go through the intercooler at all. This is the same reason they usually suck air through radiators instead of trying to push it through with a fan. Maybe you could make an air ram for it instead if you are going to keep it. Just my $.02.

Damn, car looks strange with such a huge ass intercooler!! But it's gotta be nice!

I guess about the only thing I can say is to start the fan up, and put your hand behind the intercooler and see how much air flows through. Then put your hand on the side and see how much comes out through the gap between the fan and the intercooler. If you can't feel it with your hand, try using a piece of paper or a match(making sure there is no flamables near by). You will most likely feel more air coming out of the gap than through the intercooler.
If you are going to mount it directly to the intercooler, I would try to mount it on the back to suck the air through, kind of like the cooling fan on your car for the radiator. If you can't get it mounted directlly on the intercooler, you may want to make a "funnel" type device to seal it against the intercooler. Good luck. Tom |

Yo, I'd loose the fan if I were you (blocking airflow to the core), the intercooler itself should be fine. Your probaly not going to be runnin to much boost, what 8-10psi max.
|
I have a question - what year was that DSM side mount intercooler you used?
|

Well, now that I found a great deal on a XS-Engineering intercooler, the DSM side mount comes off and into storage for my upcoming junkyard turbo setup. |
