Minimal modifications to the intercooler. One inlet was sawed off(very easy) to make it straight and allow the pipiing from the turbo to line up. Piping was fexible exhaust tubing (not the most efficient) from Autozone- cut to fit and VERY cheap. Couplers were obtained very cheaply from the plumbing section of Home Depot.

All work was done by me -except my dad did my fan. The fan is as sturdy as it gets. Ghetto Supastar! :)

Any questions? :D

That is ****in' bad...can you post pics with the front end?
What kind of turbo set-up are you running?

FourthGenHatch 11-24-2002 05:55 PM

Nice.

I don't have any front end pictures yet, but why you want to see that? The bumper fits over it for sure because I put it on already. Oh, the fan is hooked up to turn on via switch which is hooked up to ignition. I figured that a side mount doesn't get as much flow as a front mount so I mounted an oil cooler fan (perfect size as you can see :) ) to get more flow through it.

Apexi 92-95 turbo kit.

APEXi kit rules....btw mantis what rpms are you getting full boost at in 1st and 2nd gear? It seems like i hit full boost a LOT sooner in the higher gears when i'm going moderately fast. Didn't you used to have a starion FMIC?

Everyone asks me when I hit full boost and I honestly don't know, haha. I've never looked. It doesn't matter much to me because I am running stock exhaust system which puts more lag on the spool up. I think you're referring to bret(?) or something with the HX. I've read that the starion is more inefficient than a stock eclipse. I guess that's why the eclipse guys never get the starion one (that's what I heard).

Yea, the APEXI kit does rule though.

ManTiS 11-24-2002 06:12 PM

Guess what I get on Wednesday? New intercooler ... hehe, this is the same exact size. Except, mine will be the XS-Engineering one and this is the APEXI one. http://turbogsr.com/jinx1.jpg

All the greddy kit guys are telling me they are hitting full boost by 2800 and such....i'm spooling around 3000-3500 and supposidly our turbo is ball bearing which makes me wonder if i have an exhaust leak or what. I'm running a n/a catback exhaust from my previous setup but still my flow should be fine for 5.5 pounds. Yeah i think i am thinking of bret with the hx....i'm gonna get me a custom ic with a huge 30" core from the dude that hooked up www.homemadeturbo.com. I think it's like 250 shipped or something, it's a great deal.

I miss my car. I'm ripping her apart to make her go 10psi-daily. :(

what are you doing for that....thicker head gasket/block guard? what fuel are you running, fmu or vafc hack/450's?

DIY own! very nice ghetto fab job, if it works, looks can come last.

Honda OEM D16Y8 gasket
ARP head studs
ACL rod bearings
ARP rod bolts
Hondata intake manifold gasket
Wiseco piston rings
MAYBE B18A/B18B rods
...more possibly, gonna do everything myself again :)

My fuel setup won't change:
DSM 450cc injectors with Honda OEM resistor box
Apexi VAFC
Walbro 255lph high pressure in-tank fuel pump

So are you getting a new intercooler to replace the one you rigged up with the fan? If not, can I make a suggestion? That fan is not going to do anything for you. You need to seal the air gap between the intercooler and the fan or it's not going to go through the intercooler at all. This is the same reason they usually suck air through radiators instead of trying to push it through with a fan. Maybe you could make an air ram for it instead if you are going to keep it. Just my $.02.

I *was* going to mount the fan on the intercooler itself because it fits on the core like it was made for it. However, I didn't think that was good for it. You say that it is. I don't doubt you, but can you tell me why?

Nelson 11-24-2002 06:49 PM

Damn, car looks strange with such a huge ass intercooler!! But it's gotta be nice!

I borrowed his picture, and his S H I T ran 10's so...yea, his car is tight. :D

Hondaman 11-24-2002 07:40 PM

I guess about the only thing I can say is to start the fan up, and put your hand behind the intercooler and see how much air flows through. Then put your hand on the side and see how much comes out through the gap between the fan and the intercooler. If you can't feel it with your hand, try using a piece of paper or a match(making sure there is no flamables near by). You will most likely feel more air coming out of the gap than through the intercooler.
If you are going to mount it directly to the intercooler, I would try to mount it on the back to suck the air through, kind of like the cooling fan on your car for the radiator. If you can't get it mounted directlly on the intercooler, you may want to make a "funnel" type device to seal it against the intercooler. Good luck.

Tom

Pusher fans are on the market and they do work. I suspect car companies use puller fans simply because they are easier to install and maintain.

crucial Si 11-25-2002 05:38 AM

damn...down near my friends shop, the guy pulled one off a first gen, got it for $20.....

It's a good intercooler. The DSM guys use it to achieve some pretty good times.

crucial Si 11-25-2002 05:48 AM

yes it is a good intercooler...even though its not BIG..it does its job...and if i can get them for $20 or so...you cant go wrong w/ that...for the time being...

what engine's getting boosted?

M.D. 11-25-2002 11:12 PM

Yo, I'd loose the fan if I were you (blocking airflow to the core), the intercooler itself should be fine. Your probaly not going to be runnin to much boost, what 8-10psi max.

LT 11-29-2002 08:35 AM

I have a question - what year was that DSM side mount intercooler you used?

I think the fan would have been a good thing. It's wired to be on all the time and I didn't want heatsoak when idling. I have an air temperature gauge plumbed into the charge pipe. I was going to do some experiments with it to see actual results.

Well, now that I found a great deal on a XS-Engineering intercooler, the DSM side mount comes off and into storage for my upcoming junkyard turbo setup.

I pretty sure it's from a 1G DSM because it *looked* like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=1873651849

Except mine is cleaner than that ... :p
