Default my d16y8 is dead, what will fit in my 96 ex

long story short... I have a 96 ex that I have to replace the engine in.

I would love to put a better engine in this car b/c the rest of the car is in beautiful shape.

I've been doing some research on what engines will fit in this car... but I wanted to hear some opinions on it.

I would love to just go the route everyone goes and get a b16a2/3, but I'm pretty sure I would have to get the tranny as well.

I guess, is there any engine I can get that will work where I don't have to replace the tranny.

I could just put another d16y8 in it, I"m sure this would be the easiest... but I"m looking for an alternative that will make my car better, without having to spend a ton of money on the labor (b/c I don't have the facilities to do an engine swap) and I don't really want to spend a fortune on the engine if I don't have to.

plz, some opinions and if you suggest something, maybe some tips on what type of other stuff I'll have to swap out.

thx everyone,
joe

p.s. if anyone has some good links to sites with this info that'd be cool too.

Another D.

No B will interchange with a D tranny.

Turbo D's really get up and go, and they aren't terribly expensive.

ok, so no B will fit on my D tranny...
Sooooo, which D engine then is a good match??? just another d16y8??

And am I being stupid worrying about keeping the stock tranny? should I just suck it up and replace tranny & engine?

actually, I think I know the answer to my last question... I did some quick research... it looks like the best D series engine is the d16y8... w/ 127 hp... all the other d series engines have less hp... or they're OBD1 not OBD2 like my 96 civic

I know alphaxxn says go D w/ a turbo... but that sounds like more of a head-ache than going with a B series engine/tranny.

Not to mention that turbo kits for a d series aren't cheap, and neither is the labor to get that put in. (b/c again, I won't be doing this myself)

So, I am back to the same question... which engine/tranny will be the easiest to find, and get put in, plus have the best HP gains from my old d16y8????

Default Was my wife's car

This was my wifes car, and unfortunately I never drove it and didn't really pay much attention to it. I figured, it's a Honda no way she'll break it. She got regular oil changes. Problem was, it must have been leaking oil.
I borrowed it from her b/c it gets better gas millage than my Eclipse and I was heading off on a long trip.
I should have checked her oil before I left, but seeing that I had no clue it had any sort of oil leak, and as far as I knew it was fine.
I drive for about an hour back to my home town, and stop it my house to pick stuff up for the weekend.

The next leg of my drive was about 3 hours so i figured I'd check over all the fluids, oil was 2 quarts down... Put in 2 quarts, started driving it away... and there was this knocking sound, which got louder, and eventually the car had absolutely NO power. I managed to get it turned around and back to the house... it would stall out everytime I let the rpm's go low, I basically had to coast it in gear, and the only thing that seemed to keep the engie going was the fact that the wheels were moving and it was in gear....

Now, it was towed to a garage yesterday, and I'll find out for sure if it was the engine today... only other option I can think of is that it jumped timing (which would be awsome! b/c I don't really want to have to buy a new engine for it!)

NOW... back to business...

The quotes I got for an engine install were like 2300 for the engine and get it installed, this engine was 1575 w/ 80,000 but it comes w/ a lifetime warranty. The warranty includes paying for labor if anything else should go wrong with then engine. I found another w/ 100,000 miles on it for 700, but it only had a 30 warranty.

OK, people who keep just rattling off an engine code and don't give me any other info AREN'T HELPING!

If you know enough about this to suggest an engine, at least tell me what other stuff I'd have to swap out, and about how much you think I could round up the parts for it.

Here's another deliema, KBB says the car is worth 3800, my wife owes 2300 left on the car, and the mechanic said I could get 2500 for the car even w/ the engine blown.

I just don't know what's worth it... Was out pricing SI's yesterday, and for payments equal to what she pays now, she could get an '02 SI.... Or another ex, 01, 02...

So I'm debating if it's better for our situation. If I do the engine swap, and stay w/ the same engine, it's almost not worth it! But then again, I have no clue what kind of $$$ we'll be getting into if I go w/ a B18, or b16 or any B-series for that matter.

THX

ok,
I've decided to go with the d16y8, found a 30k engine for $600...
And me and my little bro are going strip down and rebuild the one w/ the bad rod.

Really wanted to use this opportunity to mod the car... thought about going light weight fly wheel and a nice clutch since that has to be replaced anyways...

we'll see, it's gonna take me a week to cash in some stuff to pay for this... I'll look around for cool mods in the meantime!

yknow I know you got rid of the turbo idea quickly, but you really should look into the pricing for just regular DIY kits, its realy not that expensive and if you and your brother have the tools to tear down an engine, you can install a turbo

Just my 2 cents
