I just messed with the timing on my 99 Si and the check engine light came on is this normal? It seemed to come on with the SRS light when I shorted out the plug on the passenger side kickpanel, and it never went out. After I put everything back together I disconnected the neg terminal for a minute and the light stayed off. Any ideas?

of coarse it had codes thats why the light came on, but is it normal for the light to come on after doing the timing?

It may sound stupid but I didnt check the code ( cause I dont know how to pull them without a scanner) What I am wondering is if by shorting out the little plug as described in the instructions should my check engine and SRS light have come on??

heres an article on how to check engine codes let me know if that helps you. Check the code and see what it is, it might me something simple

 

I'm far from an expert on the '99 ECUs, but AFAIK your SRS light should not stay on when you jumper the service jumper to set the timing. BUT if you jumpered the wrong plug it will....
check the codes, your ECU is trying to tell you what the problem is.

 

Thats the same plug that you are supposed to jumper when you set the timing right?

 

as long as it was a 2 pin connector with a brown wire and a black wire you're fine.
The other spot in the green housing/holder can have a connector in it. Shorting that sets a SRS code and in turn may set an ECU code. I'm not sure what colors the wires are but it's a three pin plug and one spot doesn't have a wire in it.
