Default Decision help - giving up the car?

I'm in a bit of a dilemna and could use some good advice. I have a 2002 Civic EX coupe 5spd. I love the car and every thing but in a year i'll be going off to college... one that most likely, i won't be able to have the car on campus my first year. My insurance is a blower; somewhere in the neighborhood of 3K a year. My dad has a 96 civic sedan which he's considering selling if i give him my car. I have about 10K in the bank and my dad will probably give me a good 8K too since i payed for most of the car in february. The question is.... should i just keep the car (wont be able to do anything aftermarket to it since my dad will probably end up driving it sometimes no matter what i decide) or should i just take the money (17K total) wait a few years till im out of college / in grad school and buy a car for about 35 or 40K. Even if my dad did take the car I'd still be able to drive it on breaks and the summer. Advice anyone?

Take the money, buy yourself a cheap car just to get around in after your freshman year, and save for the nice car. Or take the money, buy a cheap car after your freshman year and mod the shit out of it with all the money you have left over.

It depends what kind of cars you like. I'd personally cash out of that car and buy something way cheaper and throw on some mods, leave it at home for breaks and weekends, and have fun with it after freshman year.

Hell, here at my school, freshmen can't have cars on campus... so I parked mine right outside (advantage of a big city school.)

I'm glad at my school they allow everyone to have cars on campus and its not a rediculous price either like some other schools I've seen. I vote sell the car and save the money. School is expensive as well as the things that come with it. Get a nicer car when you are out if you can't have that one now. It'll be a better decision in the long run.

this thread is in the ITR section but has a bunch of peoples opinions about cars for college students. some are general statements and will apply to you and some are specifically about the ITR but still informative. check it https://www.honda-acura.net/forums/s...d.php?t=148437

Yup I would take the 8000 and buy a cheaper car. Something like the 1989-1995 Civic Si or the 1988-1991 CRX Si. You can get any of those for about $1000-4000. You would have extra money left over and a better platform to start with.

Also I would wait til you move off campus or after you graduate since 90% of modified cars on campus get vandalized.
