Car Won't Start

99 Civic EX Coupe 5spd

Drove it to work this morning without any problems and when I got out of work I went to start it and all she does is crank but it won't turn over. I checked all the fuses and they are all fine, I checked for spark and its definitely got spark. The only thing I did not check was for fuel because I don't know where the fuel pump is or fuel filter? Can anyone help me out or give me anymore ideas to possibly check out?

fuel pump and filter are inside the fuel tank

lift up ur rear seat and its sitting there. u'll need a phillips and 10mm socket to open her up. ;)

good luck... btw, just as a check, stick ur head under the left side of the dash and turn the ignition on to see if the Main Fuel Relay turns on. if it works, u'll hear a click

aaah Yes .....summer the time of year when things heat up and we all think our fuel pumps are going.....
BUT!!! before you tear apart your fuel pumps please listen carefully......................
Kimbo's hubby kinda touched on it .......
When you go to start your car get in the habbit of turning of your radio and wjen you turn the key listen for the sound of the fuel pump followed by a distinct "click" around the same time your cel light goes of...The click should come from around the hood latch.....as a matter of fact it is right behind the hood latch held on with a 10mm bolt....

Now I don't know what it is about these things and acting up in the heat but they do...the also have a tendency to not work right after you finish turning the car off........

example...You start your car and realize you forgot something so you turn the car off and run inside when you some back you turn the key to the on position but no click.....hmmmm and when you try to crank it it may start and die immediately (still fuel in lines) or it may just not start at all.......

Now for the fixes.......

Disclaimer....I am not responsible for any damages to your car or person for taking shortcuts and doing the temporary fixes......

Temporary :

1) Remove the relay labeled rz-0132 for the civic and delsol owners and beat gently against pavement or head which ever is harder (this has fixed my problem altogether)
2) remove and stick in freezer for 5 minutes (there is no real basis for believeing this would work although it did the first time I came up with the idea but I have only done it once cause I felt extremely stupid poutting a relay in the freezer)

COrrect way :

1) test the relay (any haynes book has the procedure although I guess you would have to test it on one ofthe ocassions that it doesn't feel like working)
2) replace the damn thing for 40 to 60 bucks .....

eg civics : http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/...IT+%28CABIN%29

part # 19

delsols :
http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/...L+UNIT+-+CABIN

part # 19

same part number on both.........
Hope it helps but you can't help those that won't help themselves

ooh hey sorry larry I feel kinda like an arsehole cause I really wasn't very specific toward your vehicle......ummmmm.....
I think your main relay may actually be over by the ecu.....let me do some quick research and see what I can find

tommytoes Jun 7, 2004 05:32 PM

ok larry yours is # 12 on this page http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/...IT+%28CABIN%29
and it is located by somewheres above the ecu on the passenger side so you should be able to remove the gloveblox and it should then be within plain view...well hope it helps and if you own a haynes #42025check page 4-5 (fuel pump electrical circuit)

Hope it helps ...if not Good luck with it ...I'm off to wash my ass...ohhh and check with the honda dealership for to see if there's been any recalls on this...

Peace!

So since the relay is above the ECU on the passenger side is that where the clicking should come from when I turn the key on?

No. The main relay is on the driver side next to the hood release latch.

Check out this link. It explains the problem if your relay is bad. It also tells you how to fix it if you know how to solder.

Like others have said, turn off all your fans, ac, radio and anything making noise in your car. Turn your key to the on position before it would start cranking the engine. In this position, your engine check light should come on for a couple of seconds and then go out. You should be able to also hear your fuel pump turn on from your rear seat, and a click under your driver's side dash. Is all of this happenening for you? Is your engine check light staying on? Do you hear a click?

By the way, your fuel filter is under the hood, not in your fuel tank. When is the last time you changed it? I change mine about every 30,000.

Since you said you have spark, I imagine it most likely your main relay, possibly your fuel pump.

I haven't been able to check anything yet as we had to leave the car at work. I'm going to go check it tomorrow. Thanks for all the suggestions btw.

Oh the car has 184k miles on it, I know that opens a whole new bag of what could be wrong but she was purring like a kitten when I just took it on a 500 mile road trip. I bought the car with 178k on it and for that reason I have no idea when the fuel filter was last changed.
