Fiberglass has the advantage of being able to absorb hits, while carbon fiber shatters and splinters under impact. It is also cheaper, you can buy dry fiberglass for less than $10 per square yard. Carbon fiber costs about $80 per square yard, more for prepreg (which looks a lot nicer and is a lot stronger). Carbon fiber is lighter and requires fewer layers to make a stiff part.
